building a minimame
« on: January 06, 2005, 12:08:23 pm »
I've had my full sized cabinet finished for a while now and was thinking of making a mini sized vertical upright.

Kind of like what bishmasterb has done with his 3 mini cabs:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,20017.0.html

*Thanks to bishmasterb for the drawings, etc...*

I was going to do mine only for all the vertical games (pacman, galaga, 1942-43, donkey kong, etc...)
Just wondering how many action buttons tops should I use(for a player); 2, 3 or 4?
And origionally I was going to make it only 1 player but should I include the cp to have 2 player controls?
Basically 2 joys, 2-4 buttons each player, p1 start, p2 start, exit, pause, credit.

Don't most of the vertical games alternate players?

I would think that most would be served with three buttons.

If you're going to build a mini, I wouldn't suggest making it 2p unless you have a cp 24" wide. It'll be too cramped.

Thanks for the replies,

I have a few more questions:

-I've obtained a full version of DOS 6.2 and wanted to use it with a good frontend for mame.
I'm currently using some version .60 roms and was wondering what is the best frontend for this (including rotation of monitor 90

I'd go with one 4/8 switchable stick and four buttons.  It'll give you most of what you'll need for most vertical games.  I like Karate Champ, so I have a 1 stick 4 button setup with the 4 buttons in a diamond so that they can double as the right "joystick" up, down, left, and right.

You might want to throw a trackball or spinner on there (centipede or tron, you pick) so I'd definitely only have it be a one player.

Here's a pic of it's shell.
Just started painting it.
I've gone the cheaper route and decided not to put T-molding on the edges.
I did use my router and made an outside rounded edge, which looks good(I think ;)

lookin good so far, i too agree that the rounded edge looks fine, especially for a smaller cab. It suits it well.

Here, now you can see the panel.

i've built a minimame and i could only have space on the cp for one player. but then i bought a wireless dance pad and a ps converter i didn't realise that i had accidently made the dance pad a 2n'd controller by unplugging the recivier and plugging in a ps2 pad. hope this helps!

I use ArcadeOS on my DOS based cab and it works a treat. Supports rotated monitors no probs.

I doubt if you will find DOS USB drivers for a gamepad, but I would be happy to be proved wrong.

My cab runs entirely from a Compact Flash card to avoid having a hard disk or CD drive.
