Best settings for vector games?
« on: January 05, 2005, 02:35:21 am »
I admit that I don't remember ever playing vector games, as they were a little before my time.  I think I may have seen Asteroids as a kid, but I don't remember really what it looked like.

That said, I really like some vector games like Asteroids and especially Tempest.  What, in your opinion, are the most authentic looking settings for these vector games in MAME?  I mean for intensity, flicker, translucency, etc.  I'm running in 800x600, and I have antialiasing on.  I'm currently using MAME .84, if it matters.

I realize that it won't ever look perfect, but I'd like it to be as authentic as possible.

BTW, do vector graphics look similar to oscilliscopes?  I do have some experience with those.  I'm thinking it's a similar principle, if not the exact same thing, so I was just curious.

Set it at whatever you like. I have seen most real vector games in action and Mame can't even come close.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

best settings are anti aliasing at the highest resolution your monitor can handle.  1600x1200 if doable.   You might have some speed issues though.

trouble is a good monitor for vector games are considered the worse for raster games.  So there isn't a good one case senerio for a cab.

I would love to look at the anti aliasing code and see if it can be converted to 2x,4x, 8x, 16x versions.  Because playing 3d games on my arcade monitor with a good 3d video card with 16x looks !@# beautiful!  As good as on my SVGA monitor.  I would love to see if it would help on vector games in mame.  The algorithms aren't all that different..

What would be a good setting to improve speed.  Asteroids is unplayable on my 300mhz.  I played around with a few settings, but nothing drastically changed.  Adjusting the sound helped the most (sample rate).
Thanks.

You haven't told us the most important thing... namely what type of display you are using.

Good point.  I'm currently using a 20" PC monitor, but once I get the money, I'll get a arcade "hybrid" monitor.  The kind they have at Happ that are arcade montors, but plug into regular VGA.

My resolution is 800x600, even though I can currently do more, since the real monitor I get will probably only support 800x600.

well hybrid montiors and regular computer monitors are good for vector games and pretty much nothing else imho (resolution is too high, wrong dot-pitch ratio, ect)

As the others said, a very high resolution is your best bet.  You'll find that with tv's and rasters you have to adjust the beam settings in mame to make them thicker.
