What will 7 hours of exercise equate to?
« on: January 01, 2005, 05:52:17 pm »
If I do roughly 7 hours a week (one per day on average) of a variety of exercise types, how many pounds will that roughly translate into? Like .5? 1? 2? etc...

I wanna lose weight but wanna do it through exercise and not some wacky diet

that depends on your body .. no way to say "if you work out for 2 hours a day you will burn off X lbs" ... basicly you work out so it's work , i.e. do not stop just because you have gotten a little tired .. make a schedule thats good for you ( this can take some time to adjust ) that doesnt do your body damage , and then monitor your cal intake and weight .. if you suddenly loose like 20 lbs , then their is somthing very wrong , that much really fast is a shock to your system and is not healthy , but if you see a lb or 2 a week , then thats a fairly helathy way of doing it ( thats close to 8 lbs a month so it's still fast , but not so bad to shock your body ) ...

most doctors will recomend starting off slowly and working your way up untill to find that balance that is good for you , not somthing that lets your body store excess , but not somthing that forces your body to eat it's own musscles ( alot of fad diets do that )  .. of course dont expect to be able to eat a hot fudge sunday every night and say "i'll just work out an extra hour a day this week" .. hehe it doesnt work like that, but i'm betting you allready know that.

it depends on 1)the type of workout 2)if you were maintaining weight and haven't changed or have improved diet 3)etc,etc

Conversion rate for storing excess body weight = 3000 Calories/lb
Also, on BMR and RMR...

It's really pretty easy to lose weight if you are prepared to do 1 hour fairly vigorous excercise a day. Combine that with no alcohol, low fat and no snacking and you should lose about 2 pounds a week, any more than that is too much to lose i.e. unhealthy.

It's actually easy to lose weight just by generally increasing your activity.  Walk more and drive less.  Don't sit and watch TV - maybe do some sit-ups during your favorite show.  Take the stairs, if feasible, instead of an elevator.  Perhaps now is a good time to get into Dance Dance Revolution.

But keeping it off is the hard part.  Stay away from fad diets (i.e. Atkins) because you'll basically just have to follow it your whole life.  There are many people who go so far as to say don't diet PERIOD.

There's some good exercise plans you can do at home on the internet.  Google it.

As someone who's had a similar revelation and actually done something about it recently...Maybe I can add a little bit too.

It CAN be easy to lose weight...If you have the motivation and self control...If you're a little lax in the self control area, or motivation area <Like myself

Well, if he's really concerned about this, he'll have to sneak in as a guest to read this, and if he needs to lose weight, he may not be all about going to those lengths  ;D

That being said, the "have someone who'll help keep you motivated" thing is VITAL to your early success, which will be the hardest part.  The buddies I used to go to the gym with no longer do it, and my Soloflex (as anyone who owns one should know, it should be called "The Most Expensive Towel Rack In The WorldTM") sits gathering dust.....we're looking for a reasonable raquetball club to join again

We used to play raquestball 4 times a week, and work out 3 days a week, two of the days being combined with a raquetball session.  Two things to add to what's been said here

  • Learn to stretch, and do it religiously.  It helps with the initial soreness and future range of motion
  • Try to do both cardio work and weight work.  One will help tone/bulk up, the other helps metabolism

ANother good weight loss tip is learning to keep track of your 10 day average weight.

I recently found a fitness program that I really like, Karate!

My daughter and I signed up a Parent/Child karate class through our local park district. I'm 39 and she is 7.

The classes are fun.  They are not as repetitive as some other fitness activities, because you are always learning new moves.  The classes are progressively harder and as you advance through the belt ranks they become exponentially harder.

My daughter and I were invited to belt test near the end of our first semester of classes.  Usually most students do not test until there second or third session.  They use a stripe system for the kids, so My daughter earned 4 out of the 6 stripes for her first belt, which is really good considering her age, and the short amount of time she had been in karate.  For adults it is pass/fail and I earned my orange belt.  We have both been moved up to the next level of classes.  Last night was the first class for this semester, and it was definately a tougher class, but I enjoyed every minute of it.

I definately feel better since starting these classes, my weight is coming down, and my waist size is shrinking.

Swords would be another martial art.  Our sensei has two black belts, one in karate and a second in another martial art that focuses mainly on weapons.  I forget the name of it.

We will be getting into sparring this semester, so it will be more than just forms (Kata).

Wouldn't your shape be more like this:

Unless you've got the most rotund melon on planet earth, in which case it should look more like this:

Either way, your skill with a fork is impressive  ;)

I earned my orange belt

Your fashion sense is expanding while your waistline is shrinking, that's a pretty impressive class!  If my kids wouldn't use it when fighting with EACH OTHER, I might think about it, but they'll just beat each other senseless (wait, too late  ;) ).

How do you earn matching shoes to go with your belt?  ;) ;D

To get matching shoes, I think I have to steal them from a bowling alley!

Instead of a treadmill, hookup an excercise bike so you can play PropCycle!

You might be surprised!  I have been impressed by the behaviour of the kids in these classes. When i took my daughter to her test, I saw 108 children (Ages 5-7) sit quietly for about an hour during the testing, and there wasn't a single TV or video game in the room!

This is pretty good timing.  I've never really worked out.  Not since Junior High really.  But after a few hard days skiing over Christmas break and realized that I was in pretty poor shape(I'm actually A good shape, just not IN good shape if you catch my drift).

So just last night I got Yourself!Fitness for the Xbox.  It's basically a virtual personal trainer.  I've only done one workout so far, but it's pretty indepth.  You do quick assessment section to set up your profile and then set your longtime goals.  You set your schedule, and it can even recommend a diet for you.  It even has stat tracking for progress.  Now I've never been to a gym, and never had a personal trainer so I couldn't compare it to anything, so don't hold that against me.  But for $50 (or gamefly like I did), its pretty good for having total control of when and where you workout.  Reviews are pretty good too.  And the mulitplayer deathmatch is pretty kickass also.

My girlfriend stays in shape doing Kung-Fu.  Not this sissy karate junk.  Real old-school Kung-Fu.  You know - Bruce Lee type stuff.  Also animal styles (Snake/Crane/Tiger/Monkey/Hippo/Fruit Fly/etc..), and weapons.  She is so badass now - I wish I could do it also, but can't because of scheduling.  O well.  Back to the Xbox.
