i got like halfway through the game and stopped playing, just kinda got bored with it. Its awesome in the beginning but imps jumping out of the ceiling is only cool the first 80 times... after that its like oh another monster jumping out at me , oh no...

i dunno, i had fun with it but i got bored pretty easily. good thing i didnt pay for it =p

im at thge same point as you guys..
its too frustrating to play in the damn dark..i didnt pay almost 400 bucks for agraphics card so i could see nothing ..
plus im just a lowly human from the planet earth in the ancient year of 2005 and even i have tactical flashlight on my firearm..

the other thing thats kinds of pissing me offr is the need for passcodes, i hate games that require keys..and i especially hate back tracking...
i dont like the feeling of going backwards..

hopefully someone will make a worthy mod of this game and i wont feel so bad about the money ive wasted,,

I didn't find any of it scary.  Maybe that's because my framerate is about 1 or 2 frames per second.

theres a mod that lets you use your flashlight the same time as your gun btw, i used that when i played because the flashlight switching was annoying. do a google search its probably the most popular single player mod

If you don't want the game to be scary (in which case you'll basically be playing a regular first person shooter), the by all means go ahead and use a flashlight mod.  For that matter, play with the lights on.  And make sure the sound is turned down quiet and that there is a TV or radio on in the background.

The reason id made the flashlight a seperate "weapon" is for atmosphere.  It's not like they were just unable to have a flashlight mounted on a weapon.  It makes it scary to have to either be armed, but be in the dark, or be able to see, but be vulnerable.

In an interview, id said that Doom 3 was as much a horror game as a action game.  I think why many people were disappointed was that they weren't expecting that.  They were expecting another fps with pretty graphics.  And of course, much of the action gameplay in Doom 3 was a tribute to the original Dooms, which many people didn't like, probably who were mainly kids whose first first person shooter was Counterstrike.  Who are probably the same people who think that Half Life was a mod for CS.  And yes, I have heard people saying that.  ::)

I coughed up for the Creative Gigaworks S750 speakers this year. Doom 3 is that little bit scarier when sound and noises *are coming from that many directions. It's very immersive.

I heard the dark scenes come under criticism when the game was first released, I personally think it enhances the whole experience though....

Yes, I agree.  I bought surround sound speakers just for Doom3.

While we're on the subject of scary games, I'd highly recommend the Silent Hill series (PS2, PC, and XBOX, I think), Resident Evil 0 (GameCube), Resident Evil (remake for GC), Fatal Frame 1 & 2 (PS2) and Eternal Darkness (GC).  And RE4, when it comes out in a few weeks (GC).

I didn't finish Doom 3 & I didn't finish Far Cry. I think I have just had enough of those types of games. Waiting for something new.....

Sometimes I think it's all been done before and that all the good ideas have already been done. Hard to be original after all these years of PC & arcade games.  :(

dont get me wrong, i threw my mouse a few times from being starteled.. but still, it wasent all the "hype" it was given..

tho, Quake 4 is reaaaly looking decent so far..

oddly enough.. in Half Life 2, i jumped MORE than i did in doom3.. O_o

when the game companies ( note i said the companies , not the guys acctully making the games ) start to think more on terms of quality play insted of flashy graphics ( ironic how so many game distribitors have partnered with ATI and Nvidia )  then we will get some decent games , as it is now , graphics are king , at least from a marketing perspective .. the up side of this is that you can find some real gems every so often in the "discount" rack.

i just finished a game of axis and allies ( not the newer crappy version , the orginal ) and that thing had all over it "requires directx 6" and "will not work in dos" , it's not the prettest thing in the world , but it takes a hell of alot more thought and planing than 90% of the games out their now

Well, for H P Lovecraft fans (and maybe just horror fans in general) Call of Cthulhu looks freaking awesome and it's coming out sometime next...er...this year (2005).  It looks pretty original.

You have *no* HUD (it's a FPS).  You have to look in your weapon to see how much ammo, for instance.  If you're wounded, it actually affects your movement or shooting.  You have to actually apply treatment (bandages or whatnot) to specific injuries; you don't just have a health meter and pick up magic medikits.  And you have a sanity stat that can (and will) go down, causing things like double vision, hallucination, etc.  I know that the latter has been done before (in Eternal Darkness, for one), but it's not like CoC is a ripoff of ED...both games are "ripoffs" of Lovecraft.  Plus it's a Cthulhu Mythos game! And Lovecraft fans know we can never have enough of those.  ;D

www.callofcthulhu.com

I agree that many games (FPSes in particular) are getting kind of stagnant.  I dunno, but it seems like all the smaller game companies are getting bought out by the huge game companies, and the latter are concerned only with the bottom line.  And what sells best is the same old (popular) thing, not what's original.

I've played both the board game version and the comuter version of that game. By far the board game is much more enjoyable. You can play up to 5 people and the thing takes days, if not weeks to finish. Muchos strategy involved in that game. Especially if you use your subs correctly...
