Xbox-Scene can't help, can you?
« on: December 30, 2004, 02:25:13 am »
Hey all.  I've been spending the better part of a day trying to figure this out to no avail so I'm posting this here too to get a fresh perspective on what's going on here.

My problem can be found here:

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=331174

I asked Shmokes, lets see what you've got.  ;)
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

OK... You have installed the Xenium, now you need to instll the BIOs.

If you have a disk burned with the bios on in then just pop it in. DON'T choose "Restore EEPROM"

Your bios has nothing to do with your EEPROM. I can't remember off the top of my head, but you need to go and select quick boot and then select the option that allow you to set retail bios or add another one.

Then add your new bios. Once you have the bios loaded, you need a dashboard. From this point I use Slayers AutoInstaller once I run that. I just pop in a disk and it should run!

Okay....I have a SmartXX, so the OS looks totally different, but this sounds like what you need to do with that disc:

Thats your problem - sorry if i havnt read the whole thread and this has been answered - im pissed (drunk) at the moment - but to flash the bios on a xenium ice, you dont go to restore eeprom, you go to add launch item, then flash, then browse through the cd to bios.bin and flash it.

But, if you really have a v1.0 Xbox and not a v1.6 I would go download one of the X2 Bioses.  I use X2 4981 and it's great.  There are newer ones, but when 4983 first came out I couldn't edit stuff in it with the available tools such as colors of the Xbox boot animation or the name of the default file it loads for a dashboard.

See if that works.  And by the way, here are some tips on a few of your problems.

Don't disable the DHCP (auto IP config) in your Router.  As long as you have the device set up with a manual address it won't pick one up from the router.  Do this:

- click Start, Run, type cmd, click okay
- type  ipconfig /all
- write down the following info:  ip address, subnet mask, default gateway, and all DNS server addresses.
- type exit
- click Start, Control Panel, Network Connection
- find the icon representing the network connection that goes to your router and Xbox, probably called Local Area Connection.
- right-click on it and click properties
- in the white box scroll down to the bottom, highlight Internet Protocal and click Properties
- Here is where you can tell your computer to Use the following IP address.  So your computer will not grab an IP address from your router.

It would probably be easier, though, to just set the Xenium to autoconfigure it's IP address, and then go in and see what it is and use those settings.  If both your computer and your Xbox are set to grabbing an IP address from the router (DHCP server) then they should definitely have no problem talking to eachother.  I know that in my SmartXX menu I can just tell it to use DHCP for an IP address, then I can reboot and see what address it grabbed.  Then I can open an FTP program on my Windows machine and plug that address into it.  This also ensures that your Xbox will have internet access as well as being able to talk to your computer.

I'm on my computer at work a lot.  I use MSN messenger and my address is shmokes@hotmail.com.  Feel free to try to contact me and I might be able to help you real-time.  I'm not the best, but I've gone through it all once and have a decent knowledge of networking.

Heh...that's funny.  I was just looking and it looks like you actually managed to flash a bios.  I didn't realize that.

Well...once again, I'd say give the X2 4981 bios a shot.  It's what I use and it works great.  From there, I'd personally get FTP going cos that's what I did and it also worked great.  But a lot of people swear by Slayer's autoinstaller.

At any rate, once you've got the BIOS flashing down it's time to put a dashboard on.  The X2 bios that I use automatically looks for a certain file to load the dashboard.  It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure that it automatically looks for Avalaunch.xbe.  If you're using Evox or Xbox Media Center as your dashboard you can either rename the file before you FTP it over, so rename evox.xbe to avalaunch.xbe or you can get a utility (I have it at home, but can't remember the name) to edit the bios and change what file it looks for when it loads.  Anyway, if you get me on instant messenger, I bet we can work through it.  Ideally this would be today before 5:00 mountain time, cos I've got the day off tomorrow for New Years and don't work Saturday or Sunday (though you still might catch me on at home).
