I realize the mame developers probably have no interest in the game but to many it's their favorite game...

Probably not... it's been like that for the last 10 MAME builds or so.

Since it's just the character select screen it's probably just a wierd ROM thing and not alot can be done about it...  sometimes it's good, sometimes it's all crazy-go-nuts.

Just gonna have to deal with it.  :-\

Just my 2 cents, and keep in mind that I am a mk fanatic. 

umk3 is neither popular, nor a classic by most people's standards. 

It's too new to be considered classic by age, and it's otherwise the most forgettable in the mk series.  Even in the arcades, it was the least popular of the mk series.

Umk3 was a quick fix to a rather bad mk3 release that, while well recieved by mk fans, went unnoticed by the general public. 

And remember, I love mk games.

Also the glitch doesn't effect gameplay and is only visible for a few seconds.  It's not a major issue imho.

Seconded.  The MAME devs work on this for free.  If something really ticks you off, then by all means grab the source, study it, and submit a fix.  That's the beauty of open source.

As for any of the MK games being a "classic"... you'd be hard pressed convincing any of the MAME devs of that point even on a good day. :)

The Fighter Select and Choose Your Destiny screens sometimes color glitch real bad...

Mine only glitched after I used the Ultimate Kombat Kode to unlock the hidden fighters.  :P

Yeah after you unlock all characters it's permantly glitched which kinda sucks
also scorpion has a speech problem
