Dreamcast light gun?
« on: December 25, 2004, 08:39:48 pm »
Is a DC light gun worth it? I've played Silent Scope, but it doesn't use a gun. Seems like House of the Dead 2 and Confidential Mission are the only two light gun titles that people seem to talk about (and I've read negative things about the latter).

There's a MadCatz model, and a Sega Dream Blaster, and Interact Starfire that I've seen. But at $20 and up for used and beat up, it seems like a peripheral that won't get much use and therefore a waste of $.

Am I overlooking a title? And does the gun have to be matched to the game (i.e., are they universally compatible?).

I kind of have the same thoughts about PSX and DC fishing rods.

But I'm thinking that if I'm going to get one, now would be a better time than when you can't find these things anymore....

I have the interact gun - they are good.  House of the Dead 2 is very fun and confidential mission is pretty good.  Virtual Cop 2 is also available on the segasmash pack and you can use the lightgun to play.  I don't think lightguns ever offer a wide variety of titles...I've always enjoyed the games though so it has been worth it for me.  I just recently picked up the guncon2s and time crisises for ps2.

you can still get the lightguns new at a few places here in australia, especially on the net. That Interact on one is AU$59 new which really isn't that bad, I need to pick up myself!

In addition to your the two titles you mentioned these were also released in Japan:
- Virtua Cop 2
- Death Crimson 2
- Death Crimson OX

Yeah, there are some regional issues with DC guns. The Japanese guns do not work on the US Dreamcast. This might be an hardware issue or software issue. For example, it might work on a US Dreamcast if you booted the Japanese version of the game.

I've got one, I *think* it's the MadCatz.  The aim is *way* off.   Like about three inches off center.  It's unplayable.

Is there a way to fix that?  Drives me crazy, and I certainly wouldn't mind playing the few gun games I have.

i got one of those madcatz ones in the mail today, and i've got to say, they're definately not the most comfortable. I might look into one of those interact ones and whack this one back on ebay.

Incidentally, I found a Dragoncast Cyber Metal Gun at a Gamestop for $14.99.

http://ps2modchip.com/search.php?page=dc25

Hooked and up and it didn't work. Wiggle the wire and it starts to respond (running row of LEDs along the top sight) but it won't initialize a VMU and otherwise does not function despite all of my tinkering.

Is it worth opening to see if I can fix it?

Probably not.  I'd return it.

Yes you need to calibrate the gun in the game settings. There should be a calibration setting in all light gun games. Otherwise it will be waaaaaay off like you said.

Did that like you said, didn't even know it was there.  Helped some.
