where's the rest of my HD?
« on: December 23, 2004, 01:30:54 pm »
I just moved 9 gigs of stuff off of my HD to another computer but it's still showing only 94mb free!

What's going on here?

WinXP SP2
HD WDC WD1200JB-00EVA0 (Western Digital 120g)
Files moved - 2-MDF & 2-MDS (Image files of DVDs)

I opened up Norton's Clean Sweep and it said 94mb free 0kb freeable...
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Stupid reply here, but are you sure you've moved it, and not just copied it?

I've had some similar trouble in the past with drive reporting free space incorrectly. Are you running partition magic?

Yes I'm positive I moved it.
No I'm not using PM.

It's showing the free space now though so I guess it was just having a brain fart or something.  I even restarted the computer and it said the same amount of space was free.

What I ended up doing that apparently fixed it was I deleted all the CHD folders in my mame roms folder.  They came out to arround 12 gigs but when I went back to My Computer D: was showing 29 gigs free!  I guess I had more free space than I though.  :D

If anyone has any more ideas as to why it wasn't showing please feel free to let me know incase this happens again...

also the act of copying sometimes generates a temp file of equal size to facilitate the copy.
if you "X"d out of the program,or if it didnt close down properly that file might not have been cleaned up..
someone pointed me to a program called space monger..it shows all the files on your pc in a graphical form.the larger the file the larger the box and subsequently its given diffent colors as well, red for big, green for small..great for finding large files that might not be named something you know and could find, like a temp file.
Enjoying the fruits of technological obsolescence one game at a time...

Sounds like you may be running some trash management utility (like Nortons).

I had the same thing happen a while back. I was deleting files but the free space wasn't changing. The files are marked as deleted but are not actually fully removed. This is in case you go 'oh no! I just erased 5 years worth of porno downloads'.  ;)
This just makes it easier to get hem back. After about 7 days (or whatever) they get fully removed automatically.

Or maybe it's just the mis-programmed heap of doggy doo called Windows.  :P
Now in a tasty new flavour.

Flush the Norton Protected BIN.

RIght click on the trash and look for 'Empty Norton Protected Files'

Damn Norton apps a lot of them install this 'feature' which can save you or drive you mad.
