I've always pronounced it Mole-ecks, but it's one of those words that I read more than I speak.

If I were you, I'd go back in there and pronounce each letter individually, in order to avoid confusion.  I'd bet 99.9% of the world phonetically pronounce it, as it has the word mole in it, with an x added at the end.    Mole.  X.

But really, take my advice on individual letter pronunciation.

Emm.  Ohh.  Ell.  Eee.  Ecks.  Then reach over the counter, grab him by his clip-on tie, with your other hand, rip his pocket protector out and hold it over your head.  Pull his face REEEEEEEAAAAAAAALLLLLLY close to yours, so that, in your rage, flecks of spittle will cloud his vision through his glasses, and whisper Clint Eastwood-like to him "listen Poindexter, if you wanna see this pocket protecter and all your "good pens" in there ever again, you'll listen to how I say it, you'll say it like I do, and you'll like it.  If you've got any questions, I'll gladly get you a Shutup-sicleTM for that gaping maw on the front of your face".    8)

Or you could just ignore his mispronunciation and go about your life  :-[ :-\  ;)

(I came up with that after seeing pointdablame's avatar - can you picture going into Radio Shack and unleashing hell on 'em?   ;D

I work with a couple of people that are ex-Molex employees (we're KIND OF a competitor of theirs in some areas) and they pronounce it "Mole-eks", so I'd consider that to be a pretty authoritative source.

I find it really amusing when people think they know how a word is pronounced and they go around correcting people even though they are wrong.

My wife is Italian and her parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles were all born and raised in Italy. They were teens aor adults when the came to the states.

My favorite was going to an "Italian" (American Italian, not authentic Italian) resturant and having the waiter correct my mother-in-law when she ordered bruschetta.

I say mole-ecks.

heh, tell me about it.  The Italian language is great for this.  I'm Italian and always pronounce Italian words with the accent I grew up with.  I get a twinge in my spine when I hear someone say "motts-a-rella" or "man-i-kot-ee" or the like.   I make sure not to "correct" people though since it's useless.  Heck, dialects within languages say stuff different ways, lol, so you'll never please everyone.

I sure do love when people correct me though, or as the original poster said, they'll say things slow and condescending as if you're too mentally insufficient to hear it said their "right" way at normal speed, hehe.

Seconded, because not to cause you more twitching, but I've always said "motts-a-rella" or "man-i-kot-ee".

(And "bre-shet-ta" too.  Sorry, Erik.)

Not really sure I can even spell it out phonetically very well, but its just accented.

I say "moo-tza-rell" where the "r" is almost rolled more or less, but you can't really follow the accent online.  Reading that as if I didn't know how I said it doesn't really sound correct.  Should give you at least an idea anyway.

As for manicotti, I can't even begin to explain that one. "mah-nee-gawt" is pretty close I guess.  My family always jokes that the Italian language in the area my family is from sorta gives up on the last vowels.  So the last "i" in manicotti just doesn't exist lol, and the rest of the word is said a bit differently.

Anyway, that'll give you an idea I guess, but it really isnt' giving you the whole picture.  And like I said, I know other Italians who pronounce the same words slightly different, although it's never mots-a-rella ;)

Whatever though, different strokes for different folks.  Its actually really interesting how the language (any language) will vary from region to family etc etc

And don't worry about the twitching, it'll go away soon enough

That's like where I'm from, when we say toboggan, we mean the thing several people slide down a snow-covered hill on.

When rednecks southerners (sorry Fredster  ;) ) say toboggan, they mean one of those knit hats you put on your head.

Go figure
