Dragons Lair enhanced.... where to buy?
« on: December 22, 2004, 04:27:42 am »
I wish to use Daphne on my cab as well as Mame.  I've visited the Daphne forums and there seems to be different versions of Dragons Lair available.  There's the original version (arcade perfect), then there's Dragons Lair Enhanced (version 1.1) and Dragons Lair Enhanced (version 2.0).

The general concensus there is that DLe v2.0 is the best one to get unless you want  the arcade perfect experience. I know I can buy the games legally from here...
http://www.digitalleisure.com/gamesdlseries.html

But which do I buy?  None of them state whether enhanced or not, or which version they are.  There are also CD and DVD versions. I think I need to make  sure I get a DVD version to run on a PC (and not a standalone DVD player).  And will I get all the files I need to run with Daphne?  (Although I know I need to convert them first though.)

Any Daphne users out there with advice?

Well...

You can just download and rename the DLE ROMS from the DLP website. Then use your DVDs with a utility like dvdtodaph to make video files and you'll be all set.

You can also order full daphne sets from ROM burners. My set was aquired from a friend who did this, and it was pretty complete, I just had to rename almost everything to make it work, and download the new ROMS of course.

The DLE ROMS are really a fan-made project from (IIRC) a couple of the DLP regulars. They're meant to be used n machines, so don't hit their boards looking for Daphne help.

If you buy the Digital Leisure 20th Anniversary CD or DVD sets they include both the arcade perfect and a "directors cut" of Dragon's Lair, but it's still not quite the same as DLE.

You will find what you need on ebay but not in those links you sent.

The preferred version of the Dragons Lair 20th Anniversary edition for use with DVDtoDAPH is the DVD-Video; NOT the DVD-Rom.  I have done it myself; ordered the disks from digital leisure and they know a little about Daphne on the phone over there.  DVDtoDaph worked flawlessly for me as well and the result is far better and less flickery than the mpgs floating around; which I had previously.  If you intend to actually play these games I think this is money well spent.  As for playing the DVD Video in your DVD player as was intended... that part needs alot of work.  You likely won't be using that feature.  You can watch the games play through on your TV though, its just trying to play them with a DVD remote that isn't much fun.

On DLE Vs. lair, you are correct the only difference is the ROMS involved.

The DL 20th Ann. version shouldn't be $60, more like $20-$30.

It's black and has Dirk on the front. The art is bad, but the discs are very nice.

Again, DVD-Video is the one to get.  :)  The DL with the restored scenes and stuff is wild.

The video quality on my mpegs is pretty good. I have a hard time not just suggesting to track them down online, plus there are several other awesome lasergames, like Cliff Hanger and Cobra Command.

And unless they change it when the new DLP goes up on the 1st of next year, the only place to get the DLE ROMS is the DLP.
