Anyone have one of those new Epsons?
« on: November 29, 2004, 01:49:08 pm »
I'm considering getting one of those new epson printers that can print directly to the top of Ink-Jet printable cd-r and dvd-/+r but I'm unsure if it's realy worth it...

I'm thinking R300 out of the bunch because of the front loading of the disks and it's the cheaper of the printers with that feature.

Anyways, if you've tried any of em let me know what you think.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I've got the r800 and love it.  Really cool and useful feature.

I get thermal printables and use the Rimage unit at work.  But don't tell anyone!

My wife is a graphic designer.  This printer is nothing.  The biggest paper it will print on is 8 1/2 x 14.  Eventually we'll have some kind of wide fomat printer which will run between $1500 and $4000.

Anyway, though, I would imagine that the CD printing function on the r300 is pretty similar to (if not exactly the same as) the r800 and I can say that it is extremely simple to use and produces fabulous results.

All I can say is dont waste your time OR your money on that $hitty arse printer >:( ...We went through 3 of those god awful printers back in July, we got it to print 2 CD's and then the damn thing would never align ever again. I couldnt tell u how many times we uninstalled/re-installed the software, and on top of all that it literally DRINKS the ink that comes with it, the cost per page for that printer we figured was way to high for the novelty of printing fancy looking cds with pics on them, i'll sum it up in two words "Steer Clear" of it, thank goodness Be$t Buy took that POS back....less half of the ink that came with

cheers

I have 2 newer Epsons in my house and never had any of those problems... and there is nothing online about any problems like you mention.

I think you just got a bad unit perhaps.  Either that or PEBKAC ;)

I've got the R200, the model below the 300, great printer all round, especially the CD printing.

I have a 4M as well. Bought it on ebay for like $25 shipped. It even had a toner cartridge in it. Looks like a turd, but it sure prints up great.

Yeah, those toner cartridges last forever. Good thing, as they're quite expensive.

I've been through a color inkjet or two, I gave the last one away as I simply don't need color prints that often and the Laserjet is much more economical for regular printing.

I have a laserjet 4p.  I got it at Goodwill for $10.  The best part is when it runs out of paper it says "PC Load Letter".  What the f does that mean?

Boy are we off topic.

You might want to hold off buying a printer for printing on DVDs if you haven't bought one yet.  I also was thinking about buying one of these printers for printing on DVDs.  I went to Best Buy today, to see how much they were.  Best Buy isn't carrying them.  The salesguy told me the reason is that in January, DVD burners are coming out that will be able to burn an image straight on the DVD (of course requires special DVDs and who knows how much they'll be????).  Said they will be standard in all of their computers, and that in February the burners will be available for purchase by themselves.  He said all DVD burners on the shelf at that time will have this feature.

Does anybody else know any additional details on this??????

Sounds pretty far fetched to me...
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again

Yeah... I would trust a Best Buy employee.  After all, they are clearly at the pinaccle of technological knowledge.... otherwise, why would best buy pay them $8/hr ;)

I seem to remember a company (TDK?) making a CD burner that "tattoo'd" your CD, but I can't remember if it was the underside or top... either way, it was barely visible, and just gimmicky.

How would they print on the DVD? I can't see how it would be possible... where would you put ink?  There is no room in a 5.25" box to put thermal tape or the like... I just don't see how that could happen.  I certainly haven't heard anything about it.  I guess anything is possible, but if this is true, it will probably turn out like the tattoo cd's which were gimmicky and disappeared quickly.  You definitely won't be getting color prints, and if its even possible, I can't see quality being very good.

I think the BestBuy employee was an idiot frankly, and he didn't know what he was talking about.  Even if the product is real, I doubt it would be able to replace a good printer/DVD label

My only guess is its just like those CD burners I seem to remember about.  I "burnt" an image on like you said, but it looked very crappy IMHO, and certainly wouldn't replace a nicely printed CD or CD label.  At least not to me.
