How can I print the gridlines in Photoshop?
« on: December 15, 2004, 05:47:09 am »
I want them to print out on my image.  How can I make this happen?

I'm using version 6.0.

I've also got an image that's ~48" that I'd like to "fit to page" i.e. get it to print a shrunk down version on a standard sized sheet of paper, but checking the box marked "fit to page" doesn't work at all, and I've set it in the printer itself, set it through Photoshop, and set it through the print qeue properties.  No dice any way I slice it.  Is there a way to do this, or am I pissing into the wind?  I know I can shrink the image itself to fit, but I'd rather leave it, as it seems to lose something in the shrink that perhaps making the printer shrink it might not.

Gridlines:

Create a new document at 4 x4 pixels.  Zoom in to 1600%.  Using the pencil color in just the top and left edges.  Select all.  Edit (I think)>Define pattern.  Then you can fill anything with your new gridline pattern.  You can use these same basic steps to create various size grid lines.  The one I described will be very small.  Just change the starting size and how much you color in.  Hope this helps.

I tried out that gridline trick. Very cool. After you define the pattern, you use Edit | fill, and pick "pattern" off of the dropdown. If you put the fill on a new layer, then you can set opacity and/or layer mode (to maybe multiply...hmm).

Fit to page:
Image|Resize

Turn off the "resample" checkbox.

Type in a measurement that will fit on the page (like 8"). The other dimension automatically scales.

The "size" attribute in Photoshop is not connected to resolution or anything else, it is litterally "what size do you want this thing printed at?", so you can change it at will.

While Edit -> Fill -> Contents: Pattern works, you'll be a little better off with Layer -> New Fill Layer -> Patten.  It keeps the file size down, and you don't lose the edges of the pattern if you drag it to line up with another layer.

I just picked one up myself.

Look for a used book store in your area - you'd be ASTOUNDED how expensive a book like that is at B&N or Borders   :o

It should clock in at about half the price at your local used bookshop.

Here's a great program that lets you make and print graph paper:

I don't know if it's what you need but It's very helpful to me.

It's 9am. I'm calling it a nite.

An alternative to all this stuff is that you could just hit the print screen button, open a new document, and paste in your screenshot of your image with the gridlines included... This would only work if your document was not too big of a resolution though.  Cause these the gridelines might not even show up.
