Copying PC Applications from old computer to new one?
« on: December 14, 2004, 05:03:16 pm »
I'm trying to put some of my pc applications (games and such) from my old computer onto my new computer.  I have found out that while it will work for alot of programs there a quite a few that will not work.  It's not a huge deal as I can install the programs from the installation disks but it sure does save alot of time just to copy the folders over a lan.
Couple of questions:  What prevents the programs from working if you just copy the folders? I assume it has to do with registry settings.
The other question: Is there a way around this?
I am using w2k on both computers.

Thanks.

The registry entries, you are correct.

To my knowledge, there is no way around installing them again.

Drive Image will work

Ghost should work

Any drive imaging program should work.

Drew,
Will those work for situations other than replicating an entire drive?  I assumed he only wanted a subset of the existing apps.  I thought those were all or nothing.

Yah, after re-reading his post, I think you're right.

In any case, yes, drive imaging is an all or nothing - OS and all - solution

Move Me from Spearit should work... http://www.spearit.com/

Move Me was written by Dan Spear, who was one of the top brains when I was with Quarterdeck.

I'll second AlohaBOB's PC Relocator Ultra Control.

I just used it to migrate almost everything from one system to another with great success. It moves email, favorites, folders, apps (Office, Adobe......). It will even relocate to a different drive. Like if it was originally installed on D: but needs to move to c: on the new system. It will do this while taking care of the registry entries.

This thread just got me thinking....

I had a hard drive crap out on me, as it turns out there are bad sectors on my windows partition.
