Recording sounds in mame.
« on: December 13, 2004, 01:10:11 pm »
How does one do it? I found most sounds on the net but I need the xevious start up sound. Reason for this is my mobile takes wav files for ring tones I already have the Galaga start up sound as my ringer.

I think you can do this with M1 or Total Recorder - http://www.highcriteria.com/

I don't think Xevious is supported by M1 atm, Total Recorder should do it tho.

There's an option in Mame to output to a WAV file. It's been in there since 0.84 but I've never used it.
From the 0.84 WhatsNew.txt:
- New option in the Windows version: -wavwrite to save sound output to a WAV file.

What I do, which is far simplier to manage, is to run mame in a windowed mode while windows sound recorder is up at the same time.  When the sound effect I need is about to be played I pause the game, switch over to the recorder, start recording, unpause and then switch back and save the wav file.  It makes for far more effecient editing later.

IIRC Sound Recorder has a limit to how long you can record for though  - might be an issue if recording long periods of music/effects.  Total Recorder (or similar) shouldn't have this restriction...

sound recorder gives you a full minute of time at high quality, if you need more than that then you must need background music, and it's impossible to get a clean clip from mame (due to sound effects).

Yeah, but as I said, you can't get a clean sample due to sound effects getting in the way.  I'm a perfectionsit, there's no way I'd use dirty samples for anything.
