OverLay :)
« on: December 13, 2004, 04:02:46 am »
This is what to be using as an overlay for my control panel. It's a work in progress, designed to fit a hotrod SE. cause thats what I bought :).

Thoughts?

Go directly to the image source to see how it looks without the edges getting squished.

I miss Retroblast :(

OK, I didn't go directly to the source, as I don't feel it's finished yet, and am commenting on it exactly as it is - and this is my opinion which you asked for.

1)     WAY too many "name brand" tags on there.  Either figure out some other place to put the "Super Nintendo""SEGA""NEO GEO
""MAME" line on the bottom there (such as small, and to the side of a marquee, perhaps?) or take them off altogether.  It makes your CP look WAY too busy.

2)     The "Arcade PC" (?) in the top left corner seems WAY out of place - I'd lose it, it "cheapens" the feel

3)     The warning - I'd lose it (see point #2 for reasons)

4)     The big colored squares - dunno what they're for, therefore, I'd lose 'em.  Even if you have a reason, such as "this is where the button goes", I'd lose 'em.  Basically, I'd lose 'em  ;)  If they're supposed to be button placeholders, make 'em round, and size 'em the same as your buttons.

5)     The arrows around the joystick seem to do nothing but get in the way and take away from the artwork underneath them.

6)     I can't quite put my finger on what it is, but the font.  Something doesn't feel right about it.

in ways that you later wish you hadn’t

I think the colored boxes, arrows & font are fine. I agree about removing ALL of the logos & the warning. I'd suggest putting the "warning" up in the instruction box in the bezel.

I like the colored squares.  It makes it kinda look like the happs button flags.  But I would redo the Logos.

I actually like the concept behind it... it gives that comic book feel, which if it wasn't for comics, we wouldn't have 1/2 of the video games that we do.

either way... a few things... system names aren't bad... I think just wrongly placed.  try closer to the bottom, and more spread out.  and maybe think of one mame to use (not both logos inline and in background faded)

there is more in the background that I can't make out... looks like a second magneto and a second juggernaut (left of each)... it makes it look more like a ghosting effect...

I would make the button layouts less obvious... more transparent... both buttons, and joystick directions.  also, check your transparencys... your p1 buttons look more transparent than your 2p

after a few more glances... and thoughts, I would lose the 'neo-geo controler' icon, for a few reasons... 1. neogeo is already on there, chose one... 2ndly... if you know what neogeo is, you can recognize the layout, if you don't... telling you what it is won't matter.

I also agree with some of the above statements... arcade pc and warning needs to be taken care of in some way... maybe place those in some type of instruction card on the bezel (is this for a cab? or stand alone controler?)

I hope all of this came out right as constructive criticism, and not a bashing of your hard work and efforts.  looking forward to seeing whatever you come up with as a final result.
