Chicken Hunter / Moorhuhn series
« on: December 07, 2004, 09:58:47 am »
At an early Cristams party at our house, my wife got a new pc game as a grab bag gift.  It is called Chicken Hunter and was distributed by Encore software  You can purchase it through Amazon.com.

I immediately loaded it onto my Mame cabinet and we had some fun playing it that night.  It is a fairly simple game but it is actually quite addicting and fun!  The basic game play is "shoot as many chickens as you can in 1.5 minutes", but there are many little hidden things and extra ways to earn points.

The next day I did some research and I have learned that "Chicken Hunter" is actually an english version release of the German game "Moorhuhn X".  There are many fun hidden scoring oppurtunities and a hidden bonus level.

Moorhuhn translatea to "Moorland Hen" or as some site put it "Swamp Chicken".  The Moorhuhns are described as Chickens, Turkeys our Grouse on some sites.

The series started with a free downloadable promotional written by Pheomedia for  "Johnnie Walker" called "Moorhuhn Jagd" (Moorland Hen Hunt).  This quickly became one of the most popular free games in europe.

It was soon followed by "Moorhuhn 2".  Moorhuhn 2 introduced better graphics and gameplay with more hidden features.  It also allowed for expansion sets, so there are many varations available, like Simpsons, or Star Wars available.

Then there was "Moorhuhn, Winter Edition" which is basically a new varation of Moorhuhn 2.  Moorhuhm 3 came next, with improved graphics and gameplay.

Afte that I'm not sure of the exact order, but there is Moorfrosch (Moorland Frog), a Frogger type of game.  Moorhuhn Pinball, Moorhuhn Kart, a Mario Kart type of game.  There is also Moorhuhn Kart Extra, Moorhuhn Kart 2.

Somewhere along the line they came out with "Moorhuhn X" whic is what "Chicken Hunter" is based on.

The latest appears to be "Moorhuhn: Wanted".  This is a western themed version that looks very cool.  So far I have only played the free XS version which is restricted to the "High Huhn" a shootout/duel mode.  The shootout is very well done and challenging and a little different from the rest of the hunting versions.  In the shootout, the moorhuhn "Clint Moorwood" shoots back!  It took a while to figure out exactly how this game is played.  After the you and the chicken are faced off at ten paces, a bell singles High Noon and your cross hairs are moved to a circualr area in the bottom right corner of the screen.  You must not move the cross hairs out of that circle until the chicken actually grabs his gun.  If you move before he does, you will lose the draw!  Once he has grabbed his gun you are free to shoot him, but don't take too long or you will lose.  To get the most points, you should shoot his hat off, shoot his gun, or his gun hand.  This gives you a little time to shoot ath the background objects for some more points while the chicke recovers his hat or gun.  There are only 15 seconds per duel, so you do not have much time to shoot the extra stuff.  You can usually shoot his hat two or three time before time runs out.  To get the most points, shoot the hat/ or gun shoot some of the backgound, then shoot his hat or gun again, shoot one or two more backgroud objects, then kill the chicken for more points.  Once the chicken is dead the duel is over and you cannot shott again until the next duel starts.  You get three lives, so the duels continue until you have lost three times.

There is also an Egyptian themend Moorhuhn, and a Moorhuhn Adventure, but I have not had a chance to try these yet.

Most of the moorhuhn games come in three versions: "XS" which is free but limited.  XL with more features/levels unlocked, and the full blown "XXL" vesrions.

The biggest problem with the Moorhuhn series is that the "Chicken Hunter" is the only english version.  All the others appear to be German only releases and they only appear to be available from overseas sites like amazon.de.

I would like to purchase the "XXL" versions of Moorhuhn Kart and Moorhuhn:Wanted but I don't really know german so I can't figure out if any of these sites will ship to the United States.  If someone can help me out with getting these games purchased, I'd appreciate it.

The hunting versions all work well on my cab using the player one joystick (arrow keys) and track ball (mouse).  The left and right arrows scroll the palying field left and right and the mouse moves the cross hairs.  The left mouse button is your trigger and the right button is for reloading.  You can scroll the paying field with just the mouse by moving the cross hairs to the edge of the screen.  Using the arrow keys works better giving a faster scroll and better control.  On my cab, I use the top fire button is switchable between the left mouse button and Mame player one button one.  so I can aim with tracl ball, and use the joystick to scroll and fire.

I imagine that these game would work with the Act Labs gun, but mouse only scrolling may lower your scores!  I don't have a gun yet, so I cannot verify this.

there is an english language fan site for the moorhuhn series, but it appears to be a little out of date as it only covers Moorhuhn Jagd, Moorhuhn 2, Moorhuhn: Winter Edition, Moorhuhn 3, and Moorhuhn X.

The free versions are available on the internet, and they can be installed and played in spite of the German.

Which one looks nice?

What do you mean about your mouse not moving fast enough?

I found that I had to turn up the mouse speed a little in my driver.

For the High Huhn shootout, do NOT move the cross hairs until the chicken begins to draw his gun.  If you move too soon you will lose every time!

You want to draw when it looks like this....

Chicken Hunter is probably available from a number of American distributers.

The rest of the German versions have not ben released here.

I did exchange a few emails with Tom from Moorhuhn.de, and he said they are in negotiations to have the rest of there games released here, but he had no details or dates.

My question is, how did I do this? I lucked out and cant do it again.
Can you point me in the direction of  how this is done and more hidden secrets of this fun game..
Thanks in advance.

I love the Chicken Hunter game. It's quite addictive. I really would love to know how one goes about shooting the chicken with the skillet. Also, what is in or behind the tree?
Hope to get a solution to my chicken problem.

Have you been able to find any hidden secrets to this game? I have shot the chicken with the skillet a few times and got 75 points for doing so. How about the chicken opening and closing the oven, have you shot him yet?( you get 50 points for doing so after he is cooked) There is a big secret to the tree, it holds a key to the game .hehehehehe
If you can tell me what I have missed as far as secrets I will share more with you.
Have fun,
I have.

I will share more secrets with you, to the far left in the out house aim for the hole in the door there is a chicken in there going potty, if you shoot alot of chickens real fast in the area where the chicken is fishing he will eventually pull out his pole and the water drains out of the pond and a safe falls on him. the chicken in the oven you have to wait for him to close the door himself and then quickly shoot the large round temperature dial right above the door then his goose is cooked shoot the roasted chicken for 50 pnts.the chicken with the kite if you shoot the kite first then shoot the chicken as hes falling 50 pnts.the hedge hogs when you get a good score like 18 19 20 whatever you shoot the coins in front of you on the table and then it will let you play again. please tell me how to shoot the frying pan chicken and what about the tree

Well as far as the chicken with the skillet goes I have not figured him out exactly yet , but if you shoot him correctly as I have done by fluke you will get 75 points for doing so.I am still working on how to shoot him moreefficiently without costing alot of points. The scarecrow on the far right of the screen in front of the house scores points also. Shoot his hat , then left arm, right arm and the rest of him from bottom to top to score points. You also score 50 points when you get the chicken to pull the plug out of the lake while fishing as a safe will fall on his head and crush him.Now the tree holds a key to the game and its fun once you have discovered how to get it.LOL
Give it a shot and then I will post how to get what the tree holds and more..

Killing the chicken with the skillet is usually not worth the effort.  You can score more points faster shooting the other chickens in the time it takes to kill the one with the frying pan.

Going for the key usually takes to much time as well.  Getting the key, or shooting the iron box enough times will get you the sky sweeper, with will kill all flying chickens for about 5 seconds.

The secret to the fishing chiken is: Let him fish!  Eventually he will pulkl the plug out of the pond and the water will drain out.  Then you will hear the safe falling.  You get fifty points for the safe killing the chicken.  If you can shoot him just before the safe hits him, you will getan additional 10 points.

To get to the bonus level, you need to score 900 points or more, shoot the sign, mailbox and fence.

Go to http://www.moorhuhnfans.com/ for more tips.  Chicken Hunter is the American release of Moorhuhn X.  All of the Moorhuhn X tips work in Chicken Hunter except for the one about the sheep.  I have never seen any sheep in Chicken Hunter.

Also, don't forget to feed the snail!

Is there any way to make Chicken Hunter any longer? You just get rolling and your time is up. I bought this game for my grandaughter and now I am hooked. Also is there any way to get rid of the bees? Your clear across the screen and you have to go back to stop another chicken from irritating the bees again. Also the chicken in the car is a pain.  Thanks for the hints on the safe and the snail.
I love this game.

Thank you so much for the hints on the junk car chicken. I hate to ask but what is up with the smiling tree? I guess there is no way to extend the play time? Also how many points do you need to go to the bonus level or do you have to get through certain things in the game first.  I will check around to see if I can find Moorland Wanted. Sounds like fun.  I have 3 more people now who I have told about Chicken Hunter, they are having a blast with it also. Thanks again.

Mumsy,

Go here http://www.moorhuhnfans.com/ for more information on these games.  Chicken Hunter is the american release of MoorHuhn X.

The XS versions of the Moorhuhn games are available for download on the internet.  These are trial versions.  The XL versions have more features enabled, and the XXL versions are the full game.

The XL and XXL versions are not sold in the states, so it may take a while to track them down.

XL & XXL Version: This sleeping tree possesses the key that is necessary to open the locked safe.  Wake the tree by firing repeated shots at it.  The number of shots that are required will vary, but it's always less than the number of shots required to open the safe without the key.
When the tree wakes, the key will appear in its branches.  You can now use this to open the safe and obtain the Luciee Skycleaner Pro weapon

More about the SkyCleaner
Luciee Skycleaner Pro
XL & XXL Version: The treasure chest contains the Luciee Skycleaner Pro weapon, which can be used for three seconds to clear the area of all flying chickens.  Open the lock with the key acquired by shooting the tree, or by shooting the treasure chest repeatedly.

And the Bonus level

XXL Version: There are three keys to gaining access to the bonus level.  If you have scored enough points (900+), and have fired shots at the mailbox and wooden gate, shooting the spinning sign will activate the Bonus Level.

Uhh, Thanks for the information... I guess.

The MoorhuhnFans.com site has already been posted above.

Also, the free download versions of most of the Moorhuhn games are the limited XS versions.

Re. #31.  Just wanted to share:  Thanks to the advice on the moorhuhn english website, my top score on Chicken Hunter is now 2064!  I was hoping that after 2000 there would be yet another bonus round after the farmhouse scene but apparently not.

Even with all the hints, HOW did you manage 2064 points in 90 seconds? You must have fingers like lightening.

Well, the FIRST thing to do is to get the secret tree-key.  Since shooting the tree loses you points, you may as well do that while your score's still zero (there're no negative points).  Then just make sure to get all the major score items (feed the snail, play with the "psychologist" chicken--just don't hit the paper when it has a chicken on it!, try and get the safe to fall on the fishing chicken, fry the chicken in the oven and shoot the roast, use sky-sweeper by the 12 second mark, etc.)
Also, really try not to reload more than necessary, and prioritise small chickens/running chickens that're worth more.
You can only get to the bonus round after getting 900 points AND having hit the gate, the mailbox, and twirled the sign to read "house".  If you're looking to get at least 1700 though, you'll need to enter the bonus round with at least 1200.
Once in the bonus round, shoot the clothes on the line, the orange tree, the tombstone, and definitely the trampolining ghost chicken (he's worth 50 each time).
Good luck!  P.S.  Can anyone tell me if there's any point to the big ghost chicken?

Do NOT shoot the apple.  If you shoot the apple, the snail cannot eat it and he dies.

You want to shoot just behind the snail, this startles him into jumping forward a little.  It usually take 4 - 6 shots to get him to move all the way to the apple, which he then eats.
