On a related note, what are ya'll using to rip DVDs into AVI format.  I've been using #1 DVD Ripper recently to rip them into DIVX or XVID format because it's SOOOO easy to use compared with every other method, but I'm struggling with getting the quality where I want it.  I'm almost sure, though, that the problem I'm having has to do with settings.

I recommend checking out the program.  You can pop in a DVD and convert the movie to DIVX or XVID (among other formats) all within that program.  It won a Softy award in the last Maximum PC; that's how I heard about it.

You ARE wrong.

DVD videos are ALL compressed.

Uncompressed video at DVD resolutions would be MUCH greater than 9 gigs. You'd be talking over a hundred, as the link I gave in my first reply states.
An uncompressed compression, although it is a compression setting is not compressed.  It's easy to mistake uncompressed as a compression, since it is a compression setting.

I'm pretty sure that he's saying that it's not just using a compression format (MPEG 2), but also using significant compression.  I don't know who's right here, and don't particularly care, but I Versapak clearly understands EXACTLY Lucindrea and RayB are saying.  Maybe he's wrong, though it doesn't sound like it, and the movie studios are using MPEG 2, but not compressing anything.  But it sounds like he knows exactly what they are saying and is disagreeing.

He's saying that the studios don't just use MPEG 2 -- they use it to COMPRESS the video.  In fact, he specifically said that without compression the video would be over a hundred gigs.  If this statement is true, then clearly there is some compression going on.

Wow, how far can we take this discussion?

You know, 24-bit really is a compression of true colors.

Back to the topic (sorry to spoil the pork-filled fun).

I've been using DVDShrink happily for a long time now and I've never really thought of looking at another backup program. But now I hear that CloneDVD2 will make an excellent copy of any DVD in about half the time that DVDShrink takes.

Has anyone compared the quality of a CloneDVD2 copy to a DVDShrink copy?

???
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen
