Halo 2 sells 5 million copies
« on: December 03, 2004, 11:22:33 am »
This is taken fron Ign.com:

December 02, 2004 - Just how hot is Halo 2? Microsoft today announced that the game has sold more than five million copies since its November 9 launch.

To provide some perspective, the original Halo has sold about five million copies in the three years since its launch in November 2001. Not that we're saying the original game is lacking, only that the sequel is making much bigger retail waves.

As expected, Halo 2 has also generated big activity on Xbox Live. Microsoft recorded 28 million hours of Halo 2 time on the service so far, more online time than any other game has accumulated during the online service's two years.

Will Master Chief sell Xbox hardware? Specific numbers aren't in yet, but Microsoft reports videogame console sales in general increased 50 percent in the last week compared to Thanksgiving week last year. There's no doubt that this is a great year for gaming for various reasons, and Halo 2 is chief among them.

well considering how lacking their  lineup is overall  they should consider themselves lucky.. not pat themselves on the back..
ps2 must have 20 times the titles and a back log of hundreds of still viable ps1 games generating revenue for them....

halo may sell 5+ million copies but they have so few titles in their library and sell so few overall as a result that one game isnt going to make up for the hole in their overall sales numbers..

great news for bungie, a minor win for m$

Let me expand on this a bit...

There could easily be computer games (half life 2, I hear, is supposed to be great) that beat out halo.

Halo has been able to introduce many non-hardcore PC Gamers to the genre.  People love the game, and it is definitely one of the better FPS's ever released.

There are many people, including myself, who will never know, and don't care to know, how good doom3 or hl2 are for one simple reason:

It's FREAKING REDICULOUS that every time a new FPS comes out, if you want to play it to its fullest potential, you have to throw HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS down the drain to upgrade your comptuer.

With an Xbox, you buy the system, and you know that every game released for the Xbox will run on your system, the way it's suppsoed to.  After spending thousands on a computer to run the best games, you only have that guarantee for a year or so, if you're lucky.

Also, most people use their computers for 2 purposes:  Internet/email and games.  So it's much cheaper for someone to go out an buy the xbox and a pc that's got enough specs to do what they need than it is to go out and buy the latest and greatest pc with PC32000000000000000 ram and the newest ATI X470000000000 video card.   Especially becuse the ati X47000000000001 video card will be released within a month, and most new games will probably require it.

I know i'm exaggerating a but, but this really is the scenario.

Untrue.  5 million people thought it was good enough to purchase.... I totally agree that Halo 2 is worth every penny of its purchase price.  Is it the best game ever though?  No, not in my book.

I'll agree that PC games are very expensive to play them to their full potential, but it's not necessary to have the latest hardware.  People are supposedly playing Half Life 2 on 1ghz machines with much older video cards.  Many PC games scale very well.  I agree that they won't look as pretty as they would on a console since you are giving up the graphics for the framerate, but it's still playable.

But with consoles, EVERYONE gets to play the games in their full glory, without having to buy new hardware every time a new game comes out.  That's the appeal to me, personally.

well i agree that halo is a great game, never played halo 2.  HOWEVER, the comment about having to throw in hundreds of dollars just to play doom 3 or HL2 is well, the same as throwing in hundreds of dollards to play halo.  to me, that and star wars :kotr are the only games worth playing on the xbox.  but see the thing is, why not throw down $250 for a decent graphics card, and then you can play HL2, Doom 3, Halo, and Star Wars :KOTR because all the great xbox games are ported to the friggin PC!!!!!  so whats the point in struggling with a console controller to play FPS's when you can play the only decent ones out there on your PC because they are ported with better graphics.  this i dont understand.  halo is a great game, and im sure halo 2 is a great game, but geez, theres no way im going to spend my money on a huge medicine cabinet of a system with controllers so big, that the only way i can play is to have somebody else help me hold the other side of the controller.

and all the power of the xbox...its got a hard drive, great graphics card, its got ethernet, you can put an OS on it....oh wait, i was talking about a pc, nevermind.   ::)

Don't get me wrong tho, I will always have a PC.  But I'll use the PC for the net, programming, and emulation (arcade emulation at least) and leave the xbox for games.. For now.

ok well yeah PC gaming IS more expensive, no one said it wasnt. Doesnt change the fact that it is BETTER. it just comes down to how much money you want to spend on your entertainment.

personally i dont mind upgrading my PC, so i can run games on full graphics all the time. To me that entertainment is priceless, but that comes down to my philosophy on life. which is to have as most fun as possible before i die, money is worthless once youre dead

I agree with nipsmg, but I've always been a console gamer as I hate the crashing, sound problems and extra work I have to do just to get PC games to work most of the time.  In general PC games are very good but I wouldn't say they are all better.  However many of the online FPS and RTS are fantastic but that is mostly what you get on a PC.  I never played Castlevania or Mario on my computer before emulation.
I agree that the mouse is better for FPS but I despise the keyboard.  I would rather have a console controller to play my games.  But, like I said I've always been a console gamer.  Oh and I have a 65" HDTV and surround for my console games but only a 17" monitor with cheesy speakers for my PC so that really skews my opinion as well  :P.

No, 5 million people dont..

Only a percentage of those people are fanboys who have never played anything better because mommy and daddy dont want to buy them a nice computer..

And those fanboys are ignorant..

us PC guys have been playing games as good if not better for years online.. and with better controls.

well i am an avid console gamer myself.  in fact, i prefer to play games on a console.  i was just making the statement that no matter what console you play on (even my precious gamecube), you still cant match the accuracy on a fps that a pc has.  sorry, it just doesnt work.  the nintendo DS is a step in the right direction as far as accuracy goes, but just a step, no where near the accuracy.

the only problem with that, i would probably buy it. but i have no idea how i would sit comfortably with a keyboard/mouse in front of my tv. much easier to just hold a controller in my leather chair then to try to use a mouse on the armrest or something

basicly, its like 50$ for a VGA convertor and 30$ for a keyboard input, so basicly youre paying 80$ to get "REAL" FPS controls for halo 2. and you console people talk about cheapness as a key point!

Yeah, but even with the VGA Convertor and the $30 for a keyboard input, and the keyboard, mouse it's still much cheaper than any PC I'd need to run the PC port of any xbox game at full resolution.

yes but the pc is designed for multiple tasks.  the xbox is trying to be a pc, but thats where they are losing a sale from me.  i like the gamecube because they concentrate on doing one thing, making games.  you could try to argue that their games are kiddy, but all of their first party titles are top notch and always are and will be. i dont care that its not a dvd player....i dont see anyone complaining about their dvd player not being able to play games!

my point is....im right and everyone else is wrong....yeah, thats what i was getting at. ;D
