Disabled services in XP
« on: December 01, 2004, 07:54:50 am »
Just thought i would warn you all about disabling services in XP. I recently obtained a new graphics card (radeon 7500, as reccomended by various peeps in these forums) and had a few probs when it came to installing the drivers.

Everything went fine until it came to booting XP with the new drivers for the first time. XP booted up, then the monitor turned off. Restarted - the same again. By this time I was pooping my pants. So i started in safe mode, which worked fine.

Whilst in safe mode I enabled all the serviced that I had previously disabled, uninstalled the drivers and restarted. XP booted fine the next time, so I re-installed the drivers. It worked!

Now I was worried about having all those pointless networking services etc running on the cab I am going to build. So I just disabled them all again. It still works.

My advice is this - dont disable services until you have the system set up exactly as you want it in the cab, or make sure to enable them all again when installing new hardware.

Oh yeah - direct X 9 wouldnt install unless i enabled all the services also.

Thanks, Emuhead, sounds like good advice.

How do you find out which version of direct x you are running?

Before disabling ANY services, go here:

http://www.blackviper.com/

He gives a rundown on services and possible problems disabling a service.  ALSO, he 'splains how to go about doing these things so as to give you a little less of a hard time.

Shouldn't disable anything unless you have either a)looked at his site and/or b)know what you're doing  ;)
