If it wasn't a PC Chips motherboard, it would be great.

For $39 I'm seriously considering it.  It would be a serious upgrade for my fighters cabinet.

If this combo plays everything up to the Mortal Kombat/NBA Jam stuff, then I may just use it in my cabinet (if I ever get around to building it).

The board and CPU should arrive today.  The memory and cpu fan/heatsink won't be here until next week though.

my 1.6ghz pentium 4 has no problems playing all non CHD games, so if duron is close to that power it should be fine

damn that limit 1 per household btw.. ill have to have my friend order one for me. these are great cheap little setups for mame or whatever projects. I think i will use one in planned jukebox project..

lots of pcchips mb problems are traced back to inadequate powersupply so don't skimp on the powersupply!

As for durons..

They are about 10% slower then their big brother counterpart.

It should be fine.. But you might need to pull up an old version of mame for some games.

I've been browsing http://www.stud.fernuni-hagen.de/q3998142/pcchips/.  It's a great resource for anyone planning to buy this board.  I've learned quite a bit there.

How big of a powersupply do you recommend? I don't want to fry mine or anything. I know this is a real newbie question, I've never built a computer before, but I was told by this kid that computers give off radio signals when they are not in a case. He said that if they are decased the signals can interfere with other appliances in the house? Is this true?

Also, I am planning on mounting this in a CP and stuff, I'll need a fan and heatsink? I am planning on having two fans on the backside of the panel, one for air intake and one to blow the air out. Thanks for the input!

Yeah, I was planning on buying a video card with an S Video out. I'm curious if there is a way to hook up both Composite video and S-video? I am planning on making this thing pretty portable and not all of my friends have S-Video. Any suggestions for that one?

I remember being at someones house fixing their computer, when all of a sudden their cellphone goes off and their computer starts making a lot of noise. I got spooked, but the guy told me that always happens. His case was cheap plastic with no metal "shielding" of any sorts.

I'm not sure what was to blame, but I think it could have been the case.

The board does not have onboard video.  It does have onboard sound however.

I should get my fan/heatsink and memory today.  Hopefully I can give you a report tomorrow about any probems, how it runs, etc.

If you have any suggestions as far as what games to try (with the exception of the newest hard drive games) let me know and I'll test them.

98% of the games in Mame will play just fine with this setup.  However, it's those games you just mentioned that might have a couple issues.  *Might*, I said.  I'll be curious to see how you fare as well.  In fact, my purchasing decision is hanging on how you fare.  I've got a cab set up for fighters, with a 450MHz board right now, and of course I can't play any of them as it's far too slow.

MK and SFII are the big ones I want on the cab. It's specifically for fighters, but I'm going to put a trackball in the middle anway, for Missle Command.

I could play most of the 2D fighters (with the exception of the MK series) on my old P3 650 with 512 megs of RAM.  They did drop a frame here and there, but ran pretty smooth for the most part.

Just a quick update...

Installed everything pretty easily.  I'm running at 1.6 ghz with 256 megs of ram.  I tried all of the Midway games and they all ran full speed without a dropped frame in sight!  Smooth as butter.  I had no problems whatsoever getting everything up and running (I was expecting the worst knowing that it was a PC Chips board).  If you're thinking of buying this, then do it now!!!!!  $39 is a steal!!!!

I'll write an in-depth review and post it here as soon as I can.   ;D ;D ;D

It'll be just our luck, they'll be on backorder by the time we can order ours   ::)  I've gotta wait till Wednesday, but I may just pick 2 of 'em up for future use....these seem like a fairly decent setup for a little home theater box, and they seem to be closing out the box I like, so this'll kill two birds with one very cheap stone!

The processor is OEM and doesn't come in a box or with a fan/heatsink.  It basically comes in a small plastic case.

Ok, here's my full review.

The motherboard and cpu arrived two days from my placement of the order.

Well, before anybody else gets all excited like I did, I just recieved an e-mail informing me that the item is out of stock and it could take up to thirty days before I actually recieve it. How many watts was the power source you used anyway, Todd?
I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...

I am trying to build a MAME PC as well.  I'm leaning toward a p4 2.4 on an abit mobo.  will this be enough horsepower?  what is the AMD equivalent of this setup?

a 2.4ghz P4 = a 2400 XP Athlon

this is a 1.6 duron which in pentium form is probably like 1.4-1.5ghz

which if you read the review above, is good enough for all non CHD games. But then again most CHD games wont run well on 2.4ghz anyway

I'm using a 300 watt power supply that meets AMD's specs.  I'll probably replace it with something beefier but for now it does the job.

I thought that processor speeds for Intel and AMD chips couldn't be directly compared because they process things differently.

I thought like a 2400 AMD was more like a 2.6 pentium, or something like that

I read something in another post that said that CHD games can't really be successfuly emulated anyway.  But if you wanted to emulate the other games, you should buy the fastest processor you can afford.

 ??? < confused

Thanks!

the reason AMD rates things as "2800" or something like that, is just so people can easily compare them to Pentiums. on the XP series a 2400 is really 2.4ghz P4 equivalent.  but say you have a XP 2800 and you turn it on , on the post screen it may say "2.2 ghz", thats really the speed it runs at, but due to other differences its as fast as a 2.8ghz pentium..      did that make sense at all?

CHD games.. well you can run certain ones pretty good with a 2.5ghz + processor. but some games, even with a 4ghz processor will still run choppy. pretty much depends on which CHDs youre interested in, if the ones you want are out of your reach anyway, youre better off getting a mid level computer. but say you want the beatmania CHDs to run, well you would probably need a 2.2ghz +

I did a few dry runs putting it on, since this was my first AMD processor.  As a few practice runs, I managed to install the fan/heatsink.

AMD's run hotter than their intel counterparts , i'm hopeing you spent the extra $3 for some silver heat paste and didnt just slap the heatsink on with that rubber padding on it they all seem to have.

Cuz they're out.  That's the month long delay, and I bet they don't have anymore other than to fill current orders @ $39.  Anytime those guys say "Call for Availability" that means they want you to call so their phone sales....er.....help folks can sell you on another combination that they DO have in stock, generally pricier, or the same price or lower quality.
