ArcadeVGA overheats?
« on: November 23, 2004, 04:49:45 am »
I was having the dreaded 'blue screen'  windows xp hardware malfunction error message on my cab ever since I built it.  I couldn't figure out what it was.  It would let me play for hours before coming up a lot of times and other times only within 15 minutes.

Finally one day I tried to boot the computer up and no video signal.  Swapped for a generic video card and I had a signal.

I contacted Andy at Ultimarc and he has not seen this yet.  What could be the cause?  Could it be that the card overheated?

I purchased another one and am going to send this one back and have Andy take a look see.

That could be possible. Add a fan and or take the side of the case off.

I personally strip as much as possible off the PC case before mounting it in the cabinet, as the open sides help keep it cool.

i'm still in testing mode with my cab and so i check heat alot on my heatsinks and my avga gets pretty hot even though i haven't played any games.  it hasn't gotten hot enough to shutdown on me or hot enough to the touch, but i'm almost thinking of getting a special heatsink for it with a fan because that cards gonna get pretty hot when your actually using it with a game, and if you run pc games with it , i'd say you'd need a fan for that thing.  wish someone would ahve thgouht of this before.

I would thinking taking of the sides of the pc would actually make it hotter because then the exhaust fans in the power supply would not work properly as they should?

well the base of the avga card is an ati card, so just figure out what kind it is, i think a 9200, and find yourself a heatsink/fan for it.  haven't actually looked, bu i'm sure it'd be an easy thing to find.

Yeah, I've been looking at these vga card coolers that have heatsinks.  Just worried about putting anything on the actual video card.  Thinking of going via the way 1coolpc.com does it which is having two fans blow  directly at the card.

I'm now thinking that heat can't be a problem because no one else seems to be having this problem.

Heat CAN be a problem for some people, and not for others, it really depends on your system. But ATI cards don't in general have a tendency to overheat. That was the old 3DFX cards that did that.
