Buy New TV JUST for S-Video?
« on: November 22, 2004, 03:36:13 pm »
Hey guys-
I've read through other posts, and clearly S-Video seems to be the way to go. But, the TV I have planned for my machine (27") only has RCA and coax inputs. I know I won't get the quality with RCA, but is it worth an extra $200 or more to buy a new tv with S-Video? I just can't decide- is it a HUGE difference, or minor?

Also-
What if I have an S-Video to Coax or RCA converter? Will I get the same quality as S-Video then?
Thanks for any insights...
D

Well, some people say the ONLY way to go is component.

If it were me, I wouldn't waste the 200 on a new TV, the RCA hook ups might not be as sharp a picture as S-Vid, but spending 200 on a TV just for the S-Vid.... well, if you have the money, go ahead.

Alot of people on here use a S-Video to RCA cable. What you have to realize is that in a heated game, or even a regular game, it's not going to distract you gameplay wise. There is that S-Video to RCA cable, it will IMPROVE your picture, but it will not be S-Video sharp.

All that being said. I'd just use the RCA jacks. And heck, if you get a video card with s-vid out and buy a S-Vid to RCA cable for that tv and just can't stand the picture, THEN by a new tv, but I highly doubt you will want to.

ahhh- perfect. Thank you very much for the reply! Im gonna deal with RCA for a while, and if I just can't stand it anymore, then, I'll throw a new tv in there.
Thanks again,
D

If you are gonna spend $200, don't buy a new tv, buy an 8-liners chassis for your tv and an arcadevga, which will be 10 times better than s-video.

NOO!!!

S-Video seperates the chroma and luminance (color and brightness) into TWO seperate signals/cables.  RCA (and even worse, Coax) combines those signals.  That's why component is the BEST because it seperates everything.  When you combine signals and frequencies onto one cable, you start getting lots of distortion and degradation.

It will work, but the quality will suffer.

Quality from worse to best (imho):

1) RF - (remember the "U" clips you screwed on the TV?)

2) Coax

3) RCA (Composite)

4) S-Video

5) Component

6) SVGA

Holy crap man,  I did already tell him that it's not as sharp as RCA. But it is livible.

You do know there are other factors like cost,  availability  , ease of install and experience.

I'm pretty sure he knows that component is better than s-video, s-video better than rca, blah blah blah.

As I said, I already told him that, and to save him money, he can try out the RCA, and if it doesn't make him cry like a girl or pass out because it's not sharp enough (like some gear heads on here), then he can buy a S-Vid TV.

Jeez, talk about melodramatic.
