Kids Games Recommendations?
« on: November 22, 2004, 02:24:37 pm »
Hello,
I am building a mini mame for my 6 and 4 year old nephews. My sister in law is going to kill me! She doesnt like them playing video games.. I am going to include mame, nes and other consoles. but I wanted to put some good psx/pc kids games on it as well.. educational type, or non violent etc.. so mom will be somewhat happy.. me being 25 yrs old I am not into kids games and wondered if anyone could help.. looking for simple to play games. etc.... so far I have got
A few TONKA racing games..... any suggestions is much appreciated!! they are really into rescue hereos, race cars, fire and police stuff.
thx
JIM

There are hundreds of games in MAME which are perfect for kids. PC games... right now I'd recommend Snowy: Space Trip, and Snowy: The Bear's Adventures, by Alawar (www.alawar.com). They're marvellous!

Backyard Hockey 2005, cool little kids hockey game. Works with mouse in-game. A good chance it may work with a trackball? Havent tried personally yet but might be worth a shot. It was $9.94 at target today.

5 seconds of social commentary:

People have the right to raise their kids however they want.  With that being said:

Any parent denying a kid of video games is a parent that wants to raise a problem child.  Kids get bored.  Especially in small towns, what exactly to kids have to do.  Well there's tv, which is non-interactive and therefore not the best thing for developing minds to spend the majority of their free time with.  There is reading, but after an hour or two a person's eyes turn to mush and therefore they need other hobbies.  Friends?  Sure kids can go play with them, and they probably will.  Afterall, their mom lets them play playstation. ;)  The other two alternatives are getting into trouble (legal trouble) and getting into trouble (with the opposite sex).

Make good productive members of society, not oppressed zombies that will lash out at the world the minute they are old enough to.  Tell your child to hold out his or her hands:  Put a book in one hand and a video game in another and enjoy them both with your child.  You'll be amazed with the results years down the road.

And now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

Yo Joe!!!

Oh jeez... I can see it now...

::Setting: A living room in suburban America. 2 bored looking kids are sitting on a couch. ::

(boy) Man I'm bored.
(girl) Me too.
(boy) I know what we can do! Take off your clothes!

I love video games, and I agree with you that kids should have them. But I also know that the six best behaved and well developed kids I have ever met all come from the same family, which is the family that didn't have a TV or computer until just recently (they now have a 13" which is used only on special occasions).

Personally. I say give the kids all the video games, but keep them away from tv.

Well yeah... but the amish don't count.  ;)

Seriously man, that's a messed up family, get with the 21st century.  Actually the only problem I see with that is that this family would be over-sheltered and isolated from the outside world.  Television and the internet are our gateway to what is going on, and to deny a person of that is to make a "babe in the woods" so to speak.  Plus without media then you don't have any pop-culture references, and without pop-culture references you can't make witty remarks and thus no sense of humor.  And I personally hold that trait above all others.  :)

this is getting off topic

one game that i'd recommend on mame would be

league bowling

it's a really fun bowling game, my father and i play it all the time , good graphics, non violent, fun game, it's a neo geo one, runs on a 733mhz no prob if the pc isn't super spec... should run on lower speed too

check it out!

They aren't Amish, but were Christians. You are right that their kids totally didn't get pop culture references. They still don't. But I don't really think that is a bad thing. I know all mine are getting dated. I stopped regular TV watching in 1996. I never see it anymore unless it is at someone elses house. Mine stays off all the time. I have neither cable, nor sattelite, nor an antenna.
