Mame Driving Cab Links
« on: November 20, 2004, 06:28:17 am »
I've googled this, but not found anything really helpful.

I have a Driving cab that I want to MAME up, does anyone know any really good guides that I could follow when making mine? e.g. someone that's done a multi-driver game cabinet and documented a step by step guide?

I've not MAMED the likes of steering wheels and pedals ... all seems a bit scary!!

:)

Well this isn't a mamed cabinet, but a built from scratch driving cab with every authentic driving control under the sun.... should be helpful for ideas on wheels/pedals/interfacing....

I've not seen anyone do any multi-driver cabs if you mean more than 1 player (like linked driving cabs in the arcade?)...

Hey - thanks very much :)

Apologies, the wording was awful in the above, I meant a multi-game, single wheel cabinet.

Well, what you have to ask yourself is what driving games do you want to play, and work around those controls...

...ie: Pole Position = 360 wheel, shifter, 1 or 2 pedals.
Champ, Super or Sprint = 360 wheel, pedal.
Off Road, Indy Heat, Badlands = 360 wheel, button, pedal.
Outrun = 270 wheel, shifter, 2 pedals.
Chase HQ = 270 wheel, shifter w/button, 2 pedals.
Spy Hunter = 270 yoke w/5 (IIRC) buttons, shifter, pedal.
Roadblasters = 270 yoke w/2 buttons, pedal..

...ect, ect.

I have a couple 360 wheels and shifters and my cab (a MAME'd upright PolePos) has a pedal so I'm gonna start by going the 360 route.

I'd like to get a Star Wars/Hydra yoke later and hack it to be 4 buttons for a 270 Spy Hunter/Roadblasters yoke/flight yoke combo controller. A CPO with that yoke, a few extra buttons, a shifter, and a pedal make ALOT of driving and flying games fully playable.

If you want a nice yoke, paigeoliver has a beautiful Roadblasters yoke and pedal that he's letting go of. It's optical, so way easy to hack and hook up.

Good luck with this project. I really want to do a cockpit console (XBOX, PS2, DC) driving cab someday myself!

Thanks .. that's definitely cleared a few things up such as: My favourite game is Sprint, but the cabs a Chase HQ .. so there's going to be problems there with the 360 / 270 degrees.

The wheel actually turns eternally - is there a modification that could be made to make it a 360?

The MAME route is a backup, as the tube is shot and if replaced the game would be perfect - but I'm not sure I will find an economic monitor replacement, and a tube swap is definitely outside of my skills base.

I didn't think it did, but Chase HQ may use a 360 wheel...

KLOV doesn't specify and my MAME data files say it uses... an 8 way stick. Uhh... no!  ???

Can you do some CP pix inside and out? That would help!
