So i want to buy an Xbox soon... modded or not?
« on: November 17, 2004, 08:46:48 am »
i want to get an Xbox, mainly for Capcom vs SNK2 online, and halo 2 online. would it be easier buying a modded Xbox off the bat? or should i just buy a normal one and then get it modded, which way is cheaper/easier?

i dont think you can go online with a modchip enabled. think microsoft will ban your machine if it detects you are running a modified bios. think most modchips need to be disabled before going online. this is something i need to spend more time researching because i just bought xecuter 3 modchip and need to install it ;)

install depends on how competent you are with soldering - check out the installation instructions for xecuter 3 (on later 1.6 version xbox) http://www.teamxecuter.com/x3/tutorials/x3pin16.htm

doesnt look too bad as long as youre confident to do the soldering note the fine connections required so steady hand & fine tipped soldering iron is must.

i got this which should help with the LPC rebuild part of the installation (if i can figure out how to use it - see my other post!)

if you're in uk i recommend baldbouncer as suppier for the modchip- next day service.

they are banning for hard drive size being over stock and bios ..
so get a chip that has a phantom mode, and dont upgrade your HD. or use the switchable HD hack. where you have a modified IDE cable with both you stock and new HD on it and simply provide power tothe one you want to use via a switch..
with XBMC you can stream all your media (except backups)
from your pc ,so theres really no need for a giganto HD.

Yes, you have a couple of options.  You can get a switch installed to do what DYNAGOD is saying.  But not many installers can do that.

Option 2)  Instead of using Xbox Live, use Xbox Connect to play online.

you can do it yourself..
opening an xbox is SOOOO easy...nothing like a PS2..

5 screws and the cover is off..inside is a computer..its very veryt easy, proboly the easiest mod there is..
if you can build an arcade control you can wire a simple switch to go between drives..

Yeah i would mod it myself if i were you. They charge an arm and a leg and if you dont want lots of features just a cheap setup a elcheapo modchip will do the trick.Ive got an alladin sadly enough but it does the job and has duel booting so i can play on live depending on how long the power buton is held.

No more than Live does.

Most of what you here about Lag and XBConnect was related to Halo. Halo just required a huge amount of upload, as it was never optimized for internet play.

Most games these days, that are playable on XBConnect, are also playable on Live, and are optimized for such.

I personally think Live is the only way to play xbox online, but if for whatever reason I couldn't use Live, XBConnect is a very nice alternative.

As well as xbconnect (though i've not used either), there's also xlink kai which is now integrated into latest builds of xbmc.

Looks promising.
