I thought most where mame only.. until you install another. IE, it assumes mame... and as a bonus you can install others... but mame will be with default settings.
I haven't tried others for a bit... but if you have your mame directory in c:\emul\mame you can install JFront without changing a setting... and no ini files.
Of course, JFront is really old, and the new version is very very different... And as soon as I get it almost ready... I add more features or have real life stuff come up...
