Simple FE that looks like Gamelauncher (but isn't Gamelauncher)?
« on: November 11, 2004, 03:30:43 pm »
I give up.  I just can't get gamelauncher working on my computer.  Everything is set up correctly as far as I can tell but when I launch gamelauncher and the game list screen comes up I am not able to select any of the games on my list.  When I try to scroll down it always returns to the top of the list and I don't feel like playing 1942 for the rest of my life (no matter how awesome it is ;)).  Otherwise it seems to work perfectly.

Anyway, is there another FE someone can recommend that has the simple look of Gamelauncher (gamelist on top of screenshot)?  When my cab is complete I don't want there to be too much confusion when people are trying to use it....  Thanks!  ;D

I'm pretty sure MAMEWAH + the GameLauncher skin from Screenshot Archive will work if you're bent on the GameLauncher look and feel.

I think Howard also has an 'updated GameLauncher' skin for DK.

IMO I don't think the GameLauncher-style MW skin would work too well (due to limitations of MW) - making an artwork image the same size as the screen, particularly with transparent text over it usually encourages large amounts of flicker (& possibly slowdown).  I haven't tried that particular one tho  ::)

I had some trouble getting game launcher setup but in the end it was all a result of a short between my chair and the keyboard.

If you would like for someone to review your gluanch and mame config files I will raise my hand.

I don't guarantee success but willing to help if I can.

Send PM.

Why don't you just use Mamewah, it's simple to set up, looks clean and has a screen shot right there in front of you. Don't know why you need a whole screen snap. Mamewah is virtually foolproof, hey if I can set it up anyone can. The new version has a much simpler menu set up as well.

Show me something foolproof and I'll show you a bigger fool.   :o

It took me a few hours just to get one game to work on Mamewah.
Couldn't get anything to come up on Game Launcher.  These are great FE's and
I want to thank all of them for taking the time to develop them.

It may be simple for those of you whos been tinkering with FE for awhile but
for newbies like myself, I am the fool that will break any foolproofing you do  :-[

All us newbies out there, just keep trying and one day it'll be a piece of cake for us too. ;)

My advice for setting any FE cfg's up is to do a little at a time and check your work.
Dont try to do too much like set up a dozen skins and 1000's of games up.  This way,
its easy to back track if anything went wrong.  And anyways keep backup of last known
working step.

I would also be willing to look over your GameLauncher .cfg, .rom, and .map files.

I have several different emulators working with GameLauncher.

I don't see anything wrong with glaunch.cfg as you posted it.  I'll be out all night tonight, but when I'm home tomorrow, I'll compare it to mine unless someone else on the boards finds something first.  I would think the issue would be in the key assignments, but those are all the defaults...   ???

For the record, gamelauncher and xp don't always work well together, so that may be the problem.  However I agree that you should give it another shot.

In regards the the mamewah "marks".... geese man even minwah himself said a gamelauncher skin isn't gonna work well and you recomend it anyway.  We know you love it guys but you can't reccomend it for situations in which it can't do what the requestor is asking.  That's about as dumb as reccomending 3darcade to a person that wants a fe that'll run with super low system specs.

As he said... I've got it covered.

http://www.oscarcontrols.com/lazarus/skins2.html

Check out the bottom skin.... Almost exactly like gamelauncher with the added benefits of alpha blending and video textures (you can use video previews and they won't show in front of the gamelist).

Afaik the windows gdi (what mamewah uses) can't handle such large textures without severe flickering and it definately can't handle videos treated as textures.

I dropped your glaunch config into my setup and it works without issue. So far so good. Therefore, there perhaps is something amiss with your mame setup.

On the box I am testing with, my primary directory setup is:

C:\mame
C:\mame\roms
C:\mame\glaunch : for glauncher

Report how you have things stored, ie: what your directory structure is (similar to the above) and post your mame.cfg config file from glaunch\config directory.

The Lemon Launcher frontend is based on Game Launcher, but it's a bit confusing to configure. I haven't used Game Launcher in quite a while, could your menu problem be caused by a PC gamepad? I've seen a few programs that have acted strange when gamepads are plugged in.

I must be totally FE illiterate as I can't get MameWah to work.....I will keep messing with it, but now I'm receiving some .dll error.  Can't read the number exactly because my screen res gets stupid when the happens.  I'm using the command line version of mame.....could that be the problem.  To show how in the dark I am, I've followed a couple guides to get this going and it is driving me nuts because there are alot of people out there using wah and loving it :(

Holy crap I think this is what the problem was.  I deleted and reinstalled mame and gamelauncher (for around the 10th time) but this time I unplugged my usb game controller and after configuration everything appears to be working as it should.  Unbelievable.  Thanks!!!!
