Having trouble with ini files, help please.
« on: November 10, 2004, 12:53:50 am »
Ok so I'm using windows command line 0.86b and Mamewah. I have Arcade VGA so I've used the Arcade VGA res tool to create seperate ini files for each rom. My problem is that there is no way I'm going in to each ini file to make changes so how do I make a "global" ini file that will take precedence where I can put things like mouse 1, skip disclaimer 1, skip game info 1 etc?
Step by step would be awesome for this computer idiot. Cheers.

"The settings in the later ini's override those in the earlier ini's." taken directly from windows.txt

Yeah thanks I have read the file. I'm not actually using DOS so as I said instructions for a computer illiterate would be really handy.

right at the top of windows.txt:

-createconfig / -cc

Creates the default MAME.INI file. All the following configuration
options can be permanently changed by editing this configuration file.

-showconfig / -sc

Displays the current configuration settings. If you route this to a
file, you can use it as an INI file. For example, the command:

      mame -showconfig >mame.ini

   is equivalent to -createconfig.

When I bring up the DOS prompt and type

-createconfig / cc nothing happens it says not recognised as a command or something like that.

bring up the dos prompt and navigate your way to your mame folder
then type
mame -cc
if you want to create the ini file
createconfig / cc <- giving you the option to either type createconfig or the simpler cc

yes =, the options listed in windows.txt are command line options to the MAME executable.

click "Start"

click "RUN"

type "CMD" and then press Enter

type "C:" and then press Enter to switch to C: drive if not already there (assumes you installed Mame on your c: drive)

type "CD \MAME" and then press Enter to switch to your Mame Directory (assumes you installed Mame in the directory C:\Mame)

Cool, thanks for that. I'll give it a whirl tonight after work. Can't believe I've been doing this hobby for so long and I still feel rather dumb sometimes. Soooo much to know.

Awesome David, thanks buddy. Mamewah 1.52 looks like a bit of a mission to install. I'll give you a bell.

No sweat man. I'll be in Sydney Fri/Sat/Sun - back on Sunday evening. Maybe try to tee it up for one night next week. I'm sure you find find plenty of other things to do in the meantime. Maybe starting the cocktail  ;)
