Great game overload??
« on: November 08, 2004, 01:42:59 pm »
Is it just me, or are there a frustrating amount of great games out/coming out right now??  I find that I simply don't have enough time to play them all [especially along with my arcade machine...].  I remember back when there was like 1 or 2 must-have games a year, or maybe several, but many were short enough to not consume you for too long.  But now, not only are there a large number of great games, but they all seem to be massively large and long.... I've got Burnout3 and love it, but haven't been playing much because of GTA:San Andreas, which I'm playing the crap out of and loving it... and Halo 2 comes out tomorrow, which looks to be simply incredible... in the meantime, I haven't picked up played the new Xmen or Bard's Tale yet, and there are a bunch more great games on the horizon... this is a longer rant than I expected... but is anyone else in this boat; actually FRUSTRATED by the quality of games as of late?  ;D

Well I have an xbox and I have never bought any new games for it. I wait for them to hit the used section. With that said you won't be swamped with
all these new games to play. I won't buy halo 1 untill it goes under $25.00

Don't forget Ratchet and Clank: Up your Arsenal, Jak 3, and the upcoming Half Life 2 and World of Warcraft.  It's really a shame that the publishers try to push all of this out at the same time every year.  Some of the titles that won't survive the onslaught really ought to cut their losses and release at a quieter time, like February.

Yeah, this is the kind of stuff I'm talking about - I haven't had a chance to play ANY of the ratchet and clank games, only the first Jak, never finished final fantasy x-2, just now playing FFTactics Advance, never got a chance to play Xenogears... the list goes on and on...

I agree, I haven't purchased so many games in awhile

- GTA: San Andreas - Finished it
- Burnout 3 - It's ok
- ESPN NBA 2k5 - Good
- ESPN NHL 2k5 - It fills the no hockey void

Waiting for
- Half-Life 2:  Probably going to trade in GTA: San Andreas & Burnout 3 for it
- Gran Turismo 4

Then I'm getting my xbox modded, so I'll probably have another list of games to choose from... Mainly Fable and Halo 2.

I'd be happy if all games were $30 and around 12-15 hours to play through.  There are way to many games out there and they are way too long...

As far as Fable is concerned - I gotta warn you right off the bat that you're probably gonna be a little dissapointed... especially having played [and finished] GTA:San Andreas... I played and beat Fable well before starting GTA, and Fable was a really good game, but it is very limited, especially considering the hype about it and amount of time put into it.  Sure, the graphics are great, but the areas are very small and linear [almost no exploration], and so is the story [even though you can customize your character quite a bit, the story throughout stays the same].  To be honest, I think that GTA:SA was MUCH larger and more complete - you can just do so much more in GTA. Not to dissuade you from playing Fable tho - it's a fun diversion for about 10 or so hours

Wow, and I thought it was me getting older (just turned 36).  I rarely buy any game "new".  I also have less and less time to play, so RPG style games turn me off.   I stick to arcade style game-play only (mainly shooters, and puzzles, etc...).  Its 10 minutes of fun and then I'm out (without having to worry about remembering story lines or missions).  Japan is already taking note of this trend and has been successfull in releasing more $30 budget titles.  There is an article about this in the November issues of Playstation magazine.

Just look at all the ESPN titles this year.  They were half of the cost of the EA games.  AND they were better rated then the EA games.

I never would have boughten ESPN NFL 2k5, ESPN NHL 2k5 or ESPN NBA 2k5 if the prices were over $50 bucks each.

I hope they keep there prices at that lvel next year.

All I'm trying to say is that it takes longer to play through the games lately, so there's less time to play the MANY games out... just imagine if every good game on mame took 20+ hours to play through, how long it would take just to get to playing every GOOD game... I'm not really complaining - I love that they've taken gaming to an all-encompassing, film-like level. I'm just frustrated that I can't play through all the great games like I used to in my youth... I miss school...

I'm only just now getting around to playing through the first Splinter Cell.  I still haven't played more than a couple hours of Metal Gear Solid 2.  Haven't played Pandora Tomorrow, James Bond: Everything or Nothing, Viewtiful Joe, Jedi Academy, San Andreas, Halo 2, Chronicles of Riddick, Burnout 3, NFS: Underground, Far Cry.  I haven't even played the original Halo for that matter.

Time is a big part of it.  I don't have nearly as much as I used to.  But I agree.  The number of phenomenal games over the past few years has been really astounding and impossible to keep up with.

I've got a modded Xbox with about 40 games on it and most of them I haven't even begun.  At least Christmas break is coming up and I'll be able to get through one or two of them.  I'm really looking forward to the next Metroid and Prince of Persia game.

I don't find it bizzare, when there are way to many semi-par games out there that with agonizingly long story lines that drag out every single piece of content.  As usual, the industry is behind the curve with their main buying audience  now between 28 and 35, and not having as much time to play.

Most smaller and crappier console titles rely on two sources for almost 100 percent of their sales.

Video stores who buy EVERY game that comes out.

Clueless moms buying games as Christmas presents.

You get the video store business no matter what, but to get the clueless mom business you have to be in the store for the christmas season.

Come on, you have to remember your Mom getting you crappy Nes games as Christmas presents.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Crappy Atari 2600 games in my case, but point taken.

Haha - I remember back in the old NES days, before Al Gore brought the internet into my household  ;) , when my mom would take me to the store before my birthday/xmas to pick out a couple games, and I'd just pick em by name or boxart or whatever, 'cause I didn't have IGN or anything to read about them on... usually did pretty good tho - that's how I ended up with some suprisingly good games like bionic commando, cobra triangle, clash at demonhead... feels pretty wild going back and playing 'em emulated now

I'm having the same problems. way too many games to play and not enough time. I have a ps2 with hdloader on my memory card and an 80 gig hard drive. I have I think 18 games on there at the moment. I have only had time to finish one. I get where I want to play something else too, but I know if I switch in the middle of a game I won't finish the one I'm playing.  Oh, part of the reason I don't get to finish too many games is because I only get to play them after my wife and son go to sleep. (If my son sees me playing video games he won't go to sleep. He's only 15 months but he loves sitting in my lap and holding an extra controller while I play)
