clone information descriptions
« on: November 07, 2004, 11:47:03 am »
Can anybody explain (or point to a website that does) what the various clone information means for particular games?  I can guess a few of them (like [J] means Japan I think), but what do all the other things mean
[E]
[o1]
[o2]
[p1]
etc.

Reason I ask is I have the nes/snes/atari, etc.. roms and I can't use mamewah to filter out clones for non mame emulators (or haven't figured out how anyways).  So I have 20 versions of Mario Brothers, if I display without clone information then you just see "Mario Brothers" 20 times, if I don't filter out clone information, I still don't know which of the 20 I should be playing (which is the latest, english version for example)?

Also, I have those 20 different versions of Mario with thier clone names (like Mario [o1][p1].bin) and I have some screencaps in the screens directory of maybe 2 of those 20.  Is there anyway for the non-mame games that I can get the screen caps to display for every version of a clone game without having to have 20 jpgs whose name matches each of the clones?

The tool that you want is collectively called GoodUtils.  It will do everything you're asking for (and more!).

Now, check out what happens when I search Google.

Once you read through that page, download the GoodUtils that you need and use GoodWindows to run them.

These are the most common:
[a] Alternate
[p] Pirate
Bad Dump
[t] Trained
[f] Fixed
[T] Translation
[h] Hack
  • Overdump
  • [!] Verified Good Dump
    ZZZ_ Unclassified
    (Unl) Unlicense

And then we have some (all?) of the country codes:
    (1) Japan & Korea
    (4) USA & BrazilNTSC
    (A) Australia
    (J) Japan
    (B) non USA (Genesis)
    (K) Korea
    (C) China
    (NL) Netherlands
    (E) Europe
    (PD) Public Domain
    (F) France
    (S) Spain
    (F) World (Genesis)
    (FC) French Canadian
    (SW) Sweden           <-*Read below
    (FN) Finland
    (U) USA
    (G) Germany
    (UK) England
    (GR) Greece
    (Unk) Unknown Country
    (HK) Hong Kong
    (I) Ital
    (H)  Holland
    (Unl) Unlicensed

And then we have special codes for every console, but thay are not so important to know.

But for SNES-roms thay can be for example:
(BS) BS ROMs         (japanese satelit distribueted games)
(NP) Nintendo Power  (a magazine had games for their subscribers)

    But
  • =overdumps and =bad dumps  are the ones you can put in the recycle bin first, if you have a good rom of that game.

* Shadowgate for NES came in two swedish versions, because the first one were missing the
