Political Forum?
« on: November 05, 2004, 09:47:22 pm »
Personally, from what I've seen, I don't think it will be in tune with the forum rules -- too many of the threads degenerate into name calling, idealism bashing, and just being downright mean natured. This poll isn't binding, but I'm interested in people's opinions...

I voted No, only because I honestly think that there's very little need to discuss this after a week or so.  We're still in the same week as the outcome of a presidential election so the posts are coming fast and furious.  However, I think that since in the past 4 years, maybe .0000000001% of the posts have been political in nature, there's no need.

Just my opinion.

ditto

I think we'll continue to have political threads that are related to current events, such as the assault weapons thread, but they will be much fewer and farther between.

This will fade.

If you create a new forum for poltical debates it will attract people who seek it out and possibly corrupt the rest of the forums.

Once this is out of our respective systems, life will return to normal.

Didn't vote, even though I suggested this topic in another post.

I'm more for waiting it out in order to see what happens. If they keep gunking of the "everything else" forum, then it seems to make sense creating a seperate political forum. However, fredster has a good point in that it will bring other fundies to the site...hmmmm...

Which reminds me, TA, when *are* you going to start building your cabinet????   ::)

I'm one of the two (at this point) to vote yes.

I believe a few posts that would have otherwise been noticed and answered were overlooked in the sea of political posts.

I DO enjoy talking politics, but if the political posts were separated, others may have been here more often.

I believe political things will come up here and there, and with the election as crucial (in both parties' eyes) as it was viewed to be, I think that's why it was such a hot topic.

I belong to another forum that is almost exclusively politcal, but obviously it's skewed and I'd never hear anything like shmokes, MrC, et al bring to the table, so I miss out on hearing any opposition voices and perhaps a (slim, admittedly  ;) ) chance to sway my opinion.  I've learned much from them, including that they aren't all three eyed two headed monsters, but just people who hold as steadfastly to their views as I do, and DO bring up things that make me see a situation in a different light than I'd normally get.

All that being said, after the weekend, if the threads are gone, not to be seen until the next election, I WILL live.  I don't visit all the forums, and I bet there's an awful lot like me in that respect.  If there's a politcal forum, it's one that some will, and some won't visit.   What I'd really hate to have happen is for your costs to go up due to a political forum, as it would take away from site's "raison d'etre"

I voted YES because I'm sick of all these stupid threads littering the Everything Else forum.  If I wanted to read political threads I'd go to a political forum!  I think you should either make the new forum or ban political banter from this site completely.

Thank you and good night.  :)

It will all go away in another week or so anyway, so it isn't really going to matter.

Try going to the Herogames.com everything else forum, dude that sucker gets posts so quick that brand new political threads have 200 responses in hours.

I didn't get to vote >:( ;)

I think that if we still have multiple threads in a week, then we should, I actually like talking politics.  I think it will dwindle down some in a week or so, but there are still many issues that are "discussable", and will be many more later.  I think we have a good spread of the political spectrum here and even when we do get a little... umm... "out of hand", I think we do pretty good at getting back in to focus.  Especially considering how deeply entrenched some of us are in our beliefs of what should or should not be happening.  I've even learned a few things here and there.  One of the things I like about this forum is how well (IMO) we have managed to keep things in their place.  Even if someone calls me a rotten apple in a political thread, I will still go out of my way to help them in another thread.  I've even had that courtesy extended to me.

It's not my bandwidth, and I would hate to have political "junkies" come in and ruin this site and corrupt its friendly atmosphere.  This site is about arcades and not politics.  Maybe create a forum but not call it "politics", call it "The Current Administration" or something.  That way people that are into this hobby will stumble into politics instead of the other way around. :)

I say NO.  We need a Gameplay or Control Panel thread before we need a Political thread.

If it were a choice between a political or CP forum, I'd back the CP forum hands down.  Emphasis on layout design.

I agree.  A control panel forum would degenerate into classy vs. frankenpanel and would eventually contaminate the rest of the threads.

I voted no, not because I think it would be too divisive but because, as others have said, the number of political threads will start to fade from now on. I think it will take weeks rather than days though.

When I first started frequenting this board I avoided political threads like the plague. But I have to admit that now I've been sucked in, I do find them entertaining and I'd miss them if they went.

Which reminds me, TA, when *are* you going to start building your cabinet????   ::)

Well.....since some here seem to have an obsession with this for some reason or another, I'll answer and he can yell at me if I'm out of line.

It's about half done. I'd know because it's in my garage and I'm acting as technical consultant to the project.

NOW can we stop with the stupid BS questions that have NO relevance or is there now a cab "minimum"? I'll advise him to ask if the Keywiz or Ipac (ps/2 or usb?) is better, if that will make you happier. Oh! Waitaminute! I know, I'll have him ask all of the monitor vs TV questions that I've already answered for him! THAT outta do it now, shouldn't it?

I voted no, but with a caveat: I vote "no" assuming that there will be no political noise here at all.

If it's a choice between
(a) political threads in another forum or (b) political threads here, then I vote for a "Political Forum"

If it's a choice between:
(c) Political threads in another forum or (d) NO political threads at all, then I vote for no "Political Forum"

It's been my experience that, as a forum grows, political threads will pop up, particularly in the "Off Topic" or "Everything Else" forums.  If the mods don't want that type of discussion, then threads will have to be locked/deleted.  If the mods don't mind it, then I'd rather it be in it's own spot.
