Color washed out when monitor is vertical
« on: November 05, 2004, 05:45:47 pm »
I've got a weird problem and I'm wondering if a local guru might share some of his wisdom with this lowly noob...

I'm working on converting an old 15" monitor from non-use/junk classification to in-use/entertainment status by building a bartop arcade unit around it.

It is an IBM SVGA monitor that can display up to 1024x768 at 60Hz. Ideally, I'd like to decase it and mount it vertically.

I've built a pure dos Mame PC to run Galaga and configured it to rotate the output clockwise. The image came out on the monitor and looked pretty good.

While I was watching the Galaga demo, I decided to set the monitor on it's side so that I could see the image right-side-up. In so doing, I noticed that the color had become all washed out. I found this odd and figured it probably isn't good for the monitor so I placed it back on it's feet. When I did that, the image went back to normal.

I suspect that the 'innards' of the monitor are flexing under their weight and offsetting the beams.

I was wondering, is this a normal thing? Would the same thing happen on a different/newer monitor? Are there special considerations to take into account when mounting a monitor vertically?

Any insight would be appreciated.

You are changing the picture tube's orientation to the Earth's magnetic fields. You need to degauss the picture tube when you change it's position.

I was hoping it was going to be something simple.

I tried it out, and sure enough, it's working fine now.

Thanks!
