Radeon 7K, WG 7K, advmame dos - problems
« on: November 04, 2004, 11:55:34 pm »
I have heard many good things surrounding the Radeon 7000's (VisionTek Dual Monitor version) support via Advmame on arcade monitors.  Well, I can't get this thing to work for me and I'm going crazy trying to figure it out.

I'm running pure DOS 7, with the most recent advmame.  I am using ArcadeOS (Incabinet = 1) as a front-end, which display perfectly on my arcade monitor.  But, with advmame, I cannot configure it to display correct colors, resolutions, etc.  What I mean is, I have followed the how-to for setting up advmame via advcfg and advv.  This seems to go well as I can tweak various resolutions, BUT when I choose the 16bit color palette in advv, all text on the screen disappears.  This doesn't seem right.  Then, if run a game via advmame, such as Mr. Do!, all of the colors are wrong or missing, unless I force 8bit color in advmame.rc.  I am using "device_video auto", since I thought that the Radeon was automatically supported in the advmame drivers.

So, through experimentation, I found that "device_video vgaline" will at least display the proper colors.  But, it hangs advmame when I escape from a game.  Also, most resolutions show up with a "double image" on my screen (compressed vertically, but 2 images side-by-side).

Is there a trick, or something that I'm missing, here?  Am I supposed to run a TSR from my autoexec.bat to support the ATI Radeon 7000 in advmame?  What should my configuration be for this card?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks for your attention.

It sounds like your card isn't supported.  Most likely because Visiontek didn't  follow the reference design exactly, or ATI is playing chipset name games.  While it's possible that ATI has released a revision of the radeon 7000 and it's not supported yet by svgalib, I haven't heard of anything yet, so it's unlikely.

My recommendation, try a different video card.  Don't use ATI cards that are manufactured by anyone other than ATI.  Use only the standard ATI models or AIW versions, don't use any of their weirdo models/revisions.

For Nvidia cards, make sure the card is manufactured by either visiontek (older cards) or PNY (recent cards).
