Killer Instinct 1 and 2
« on: November 03, 2004, 12:32:42 am »
What exactly are the min specs for a full 60fps with no audio skipping.. i figured a tbred 1.33 athlon and 368 ram should of been fine... and seeing as win2k uses jack for resources mame32 should have been ok..

am i just totally wrong here? i mean, at least KI1 should have worked proper, and its pretty close, but i swear it should be able to do this fine.. :(

Are you Using Mame or Ultra64?  Ultra64 is much faster for K1 and K2 than Mame is.

The ultra64/kiame emu is fast because it's full of hacks to speed things up, hense why its 100x more unstable than Mame's emulation of KI1 and 2.

Ultra64 is not a Nintendo64 emulator it is an emulator specifically for the Killer Instinct 1 and 2 arcade games.  It runs the arcade versions of the games at full speed on my computer and I've never had any problems with it being unstable.

IIRC, you can convert the chd image to the .img file that the U64 emulator requires.  I think you basically have to just unpack it with chdman into it's raw state.

Alternatively you can change the U64 image to a chd format, but you have to change some bytes.  Those tools are available on the 'net somewhere, but I don't remember where.

I have an AMD 2400+ with 512mb RAM and KI1 runs perfectly. I do encounter al bunch of slowdown with KI2 running on MAME .88.

Maybe I need to disable or enable something for it to run faster.

Jeeze, give it a few minutes!  There were like an hour and a half between your posts.

As for how to expand the CHD image, you'll need chdman.  Type chdman at a command prompt, and it should give you a list of commands (don't remember what they are at the mo)  You want to expand the image, pretty much.

Okay, I just tried this for myself.  The command to expand the image is

chdman -extract kinst.chd kinst.img

HOWEVER: the emulator is looking for the correct version of the .img file, and the one in Mame isn't it.  There's likely a way to 'convert' it, but I'm guessing it's more trouble than it's worth.  By convert, I mean to make it a corrupt image, which IIRC the original was.  The sectors, etc aren't in the right place, so if you use the Mame version, you'll get a blue screen, the voice says 'DANGER' and that's it.

Just my two cents...

I run KI on MAME w/ mamewah on my 1700+ XP (overclocked to 166FSB) with 256MB of PC2700 w/o any problems.  Built-in sound, LAN and video (nForce2).

It did seem that things ran better on WinXP Home than Windows 2k, though.

Maybe try running it through command-line MAME rather than MAME32 to see if that improves things, too.
One word of warning when building a Mame cabinet, hook up the controls LAST!!!  If you don't, it will probably take you 3 - 6 additional months to finish the cabinet.  -JustMichael

KI1 ALMOST runs full speed.. i just think my cpu is lacking for mame use..

It runs the arcade versions of the games at full speed on my computer and I've never had any problems with it being unstable.

Couldn't be more of an incorrect statement.  Let ki2 run in attract mode for a few minutes... not only will all the text screw up but it will crash.  Also the timing, ai and all other effects regarding speed are off.  Even the u64 author openly admits this.  It was great when it was the only emulator we had, but it's time to move on.  Thus why the emulator has pretty much been abandoned.

There are plenty of other factors that affec t your framerate though,, from sound samplerate settings to what kind of graphice card you have, using -ddraw versus -direct3d, etc... It even seem that presence of bezel artwork might make a difference from what I gathered in another thread,
Unfortunately there is no good "tweaking" guide from MAME that I know of. Maybe tweaks would be too machine specific to warrant being in such a guide? Read windows.txt in the MAME docs directory as a starting point and play with it.

Also, did you try running mamepp.exe or mameat.exe, the pentium-pro (and above) or Athlon (and above) versions of the mame executable. Dop a search (here or google) for a place to get them, or compile your own. It might help a bit.

maybe more RAM too?

this and the fact that i'm usted to a linux enviorment , is why i grab the source when each version of mame comes out and tweak it to match my machine  , although the documention on that is even more lacking.

Or you could just wait.  I remember KI1 and 2 running pretty choppy on my athlon xp 1800 when I had version .66.  I now have version .87 and they're quite noticably faster.  U64 isn't worth the effort.
