s-video and light gun
« on: November 02, 2004, 02:26:51 pm »

ok it was a toss up on weather to post this in the tv section of another one , but i think this is more s-video related so it ended up here :-)

ok here is what i got , xp-pro with a geforce 5200 s-video out card and the latest drivers , s-video cable to a rca adapter to a raidoshack rca to coax to sony 27" tv ( i would much rather have a tv that has s-video in , but the 27" was free ) ...

so far this has worked flawlessly , the problem comes in when i stick my actlabs usb tv gun between the vid card and the s-vid cable .. it works great , as long as the game is bright , in other words , when their is low light level , or even black screen with white print , their is no picture on the tv , this is not a problem in area 51 , but aliens 3 is a nightmare , the tv turns on and off constantly , turning up gamma helps and i think if i turn it up much more it will make the problem go away , except it's really starting to effect video quality...

i'm thinking that the gun is taking out part of the signal and needs a high input in order to pass that same signal to the tv ... i know the soultion is probly get rid of the radio shack rca->coax box , but that really isnt an option ( unless someone wants to give me the $ for a new 27" )

is their a way to boost the signal? .. should i overdrive the contrast/bightness on the vid card and turn it down on the tv? ( may help , but i think the vid quality will suffer ) , like i said , any white flashing large bright areas and the screen is fine , it's the darker areas and shadows that kills the signal to the tv and i get static thats the problem

another option may be to stick an old vcr in the box , this may be able to boost the signal and it has a s-video in ,so in effect elimate the raido shack box - thats what i will try next . .it's a kludge , but it may work.
