how can I get my tv to start up just by pluging it in?
« on: November 02, 2004, 12:04:04 am »
I have a sanyo 27" tv that I want to put in my cab. the problem is, the tv infrared sensor no longer works. I would like to be able to just plug in the power cord and have it turn on. The way I turn on the tv right now, is manually pushing the power button on the tv.  Once I put the tv in the cab, I have no more access to the power button. Can some help me? ???

You're probably looking for something like the SmartStrip:

http://www.bitsltd.net/smartstrip/

Lots of people use that, or you can be hardcore and wire it like a man.

I don't exactly understand how that smartstrip works in relation to TVs since I have the same problem....
If you unplug a TV and plug it back it in, it will be in off mode, how does this strip work?

I think the real solution is something that lets you basically press the on button in your TV from somewhere else in the cab, how do you do that? You said wire it yourself, please explain

Wire it yourself, that means you REWIRE the POWER BUTTON to be SOMEWHERE ELSE. Sheesh dude, open the TV find the power button, snip the wires off and run them to a switch you can reach.

Chilloutdude and quit being a jerk like all these other typical internet nerds I've seen today. There's other ways to wire a TV power switch

but this smartstrip would be better if I knew how it worked as intended above

Can you list exactly what make and model of Sanyo TV you have.

I have no idea of your level of technical knowledge on TV's so I'll keep this at the "patronising" level ;)

For some TV's you can get into "Service Menu" and alter all sorts things to do with how the telly operates and display tweaks and such like. It may be possible for you to enable the tv to not go into standby when the power is turned off and turned on again.

Beware that using service menu's can change settings that WILL damage the TV or set it up in a way that'll require an engineer to put it back right.

Please stop with the hostility.  I've read through tons of posts and paige seems to be the only one willing to help you out without geting a headache.  Do a google search on "smartstrip" and click on the first thing that comes up.  It's not that hard.

tnanh,

I have a cab setup using a smartstrip. Smartstrip work great! At first I had a problem, because I wanted to start my whole cab with my PC power switch, but with my ATX power supply is always hot, so everything stayed on. I then switch everything on with the cab's light switch.

This is how it works. There is one outlet (control outlet) that controls all the others (switchable outlets) and there are some that are always hot. When I shut down from the control outlet (where my light is connected) it stops power to the rest of my cab. Works everytime.

I would still like to shut everything off from my PC power switch though.

SMARTSTRIP WILL NOT SOLVE HIS PROBLEM.

People, please don't post until you've read that which you're replying to.  His problem is that, when plugged in, his television does not default to "On".  A smartstrip will make the TV get power when the computer comes on (and a neat little device it is, I'll agree to that), but if the TV stays off, that doesn't do him much good, does it?

you're right, my bad on the TV. i was thinking the video at retroblast showed a TV turning on, but it's an arcade monitor.

guess this is another reason that an arcade monitor might be better than a TV. :)

I'm sorry, I know it's been pointed out that it won't work and that you should think before you post etc ... but I found that hilarious  ;D

(not quite as funny if he'd have killed himself of course - but nevertheless it WAS funny)

Right, as it's twenty years old the chances are that they'll be little or no information about a service menu. Quite likely that there will be no service menu.

If this can be turned on by a remote control then one aletrnative would be to link up a relay (remote IR transmitter) and just use the existing remote to turn it on from outside the cabinet. Although I suspect that doing this might turn out to be more expensive than buying a second hand TV that will turn on.

As to rigging the power switch then I'd say that unless you know your way around televisions then poking around inside the case is a bad, bad idea. Either get someone with a greater technical knowledge than yourself to do it or just don't bother and go the remote IR relay route or just buy a second hand telly. It's a fun hobby but not worth killing yourself over.

Some people here might think I'm being over cautious here but I really don't think you should be poking around inside what is effectively a sealed unit without the correct training and supervision.

I was wondering if I could get into the service menu on my TV and have it turn on automatically. Also is it wise to do that in a sense of is it 'okay' for the TV to be setup that way without any future damage?

It's a Sanyo 27" Flat Screen DS27930, I got it about a month ago at Wal-Mart so I imagine it has one. Since I'm not ready to decase the TV the alternate route for me is to drill a small hole in the front.

Thanks in advance,
Guybrush

I have a sanyo, with an auto-on after power-on feature. That is what you need to activate. If it is not available as a menu option, you will have to make an electrical change to the TV or wire up another switch with easy access.

You can also buy a replacement IR sensor, and wire it to the one you have if that is broken. If the stuff that connects to the sensor is broken, then you'll still be out of luck.

Smartstrip won't help you in this instance, though.

I'll have to check on that auto-on after power-on feature. I'll probably just drill a hole in front though just to be sure as we'll be mounting the front bezel from the outsides of the cabinet so it won't exactly be easy to get to the TV once that piece is in place. :)

Thanks again,
Guybrush

Yeah, it worked with my TV.  I think it would work with most.  If you don't want to open up the case to short that switch I bet you could use a screw or something to keep the power switch pressed in.
