ArcadeOS help please
« on: November 01, 2004, 03:32:31 am »
please dont tell me to do a search, cuz I have no clue WHAT To search for.

I have almost no understanding of DOS, but all I do know is I want a program that can be a frontend to multiple emulators that starts up when the computer starts up (so you turn computer on, go straight to frontend)

first of all, I've tried it so far and don't understand why it takes so darn long for the game to load?

with very detailed instructions, how do I make it so the computer starts up right to arcadeos (and then also be able to exit to windows again)

how do I edit stuff in mame dos version, like sound options, joystick options etc

Depending on your hardware,  it sounds like you might be better off avoiding dos and just booting to windows.

Check out desmatic's dos mame help site anyway (there's a link to it from mameworld) - this will give you a pretty good start.

You might also try omnicade (google) and easymamecab (google) - both provide an "out of the box" cd-install system that should get you up and running.

For arcadeos, just read the docs that come with it - its pretty much set up by editing the arcadeos.cfg file (for mame, anyway). Depending on what version of mame you're using, mame settings are stored in files: mame.cfg (dos), mame.ini (windows) advmame.rc (advance mame).

Spend some time looking through this forum for some ideas.

Best thing to do is jump in and give it a go!!

Shut up! Bloody Vikings!!

i am just telling you the easiest way to set ArcadeOS in ur Computer.

every thing is available such as system files which will help you
to direct boot into an arcadeOs.

download modified versions of (TOOLS,DefMAME,ArcadeOsPLUS) and
set them in your C: drive.
you will be able to do all you want. ;)

The Project Arcade book has a nice section detailing how to set up your computer to go right into your front end upon boot up... check it out!

First you need to start your computer at pure DOS7.
unhide MSdos.sys in you C: drive.
open it with notepad.

BOOTGUI=0
then you will get dos7 which is necessery for ARCADEos.

again want to go at WINDOWS.

why use DOS?  it sucks.  Use a normal OS, WinXP or Linux, and quit making things so complicated.  Just stick mamewah in your startup folder and bam, starts up at boot.

ya I hate dos but I figured it was my only option
I'd much rather use windows.....but how do I make a good frontend like mamewah start up at launch (as if it were a real arcade....you turn it on...goes to game selection menu, all configurable using arcade controls?

you can drop mamewah in the startup folder or run it as your shelll.  You can also change your boot up screens on some systems and your windows startup screens to really mask the fact its a computer.

themexp.org for bootscreens/startup screens.

There should be a post in this forum on the first few pages about making mamewah shell... otherwise just drop the .exe in the startup folder
first off your and idiot

Well if you're using windows
click Start -> Programs -> Startup
Any program or shortcut put in there will be started once windows starts.  You will probably still see windows for a brief period though.

Hmm ok for both frontends, how do I configure specific game controls (like say a configuration I ONLY want to use for a single game, not all of them)? How do i change the shift button to something else other than start buttons? How do I change the art background of arcadeOS?

And also how do I lock things so people who come over to my house or something can ONLY choose from a list of games? and possibly be able to reconfigure the button setup

themexp.org for bootscreens/startup screens.

Pointdablame:

Themexp.org people want to install some adware.  Did you do that or did you pay?

They say you can click cancel and still get the download, but it didnt't work for me.

Honestly, I don't really recall. It's been a while since I've downloaded from there myself, but I don't remember any adware.  I'll have to give it a shot I guess.   There are also a few other big archives of bootscreens, but their names escape me.  A google search would probably turn up a lot of hits.
