Any ideas what is wrong with the monitor?
« on: October 25, 2004, 02:10:11 pm »
I have a 50Inch arcade monitor, i want my computer up to it.
i have plugged up my Radeon 9200 ( lol ) to the monitor , via a stripped VGA cable, . i did not use BNC pluggs like i should of done. anyway, it shows two screens ( see picture ) and some quick but smooth vertical rolling. this is a 24K input what does that mean?. by the way, when i plug all of the wires in R G B and Syc, the colour Green only shows up, however when i turn up the brightness and contrast on the monitor it shows Blue and Green, but low Red. i have enabled Two monitors, One primary, one sencondary. the 50inch tv is the secondary, and i have tryed primary with it. look at the photos to evaluate yourself, and hopefully help me, by the way, the "Remote board" on this unit, is only V-Hold Brigtness Contrast , and two small pots that don,t do much V and H , and two other test buttons called Static and Dynamic.
And inside the machine there is a Focus for the RGB and the usual brightness on the Neckboards on the vacum tubes, please be fragile with me, i am only 15, and don,t want to get killed from the shock of these monitors!, i am perfectly aware of what i am doing, and what dangers are included!

Thank you

Double Image:
1) Your computer natively outputs (e.g. in ALL programs except AdvanceMame confiugured specifically for your monitor) signals requiring at least a 30 KHz horizontal frequency.  This is a VGA signal.

2) Your arcade monitor says it requires 24K input, meaning it is a medium-res (EGA) monitor.

3) Attempting to drive a monitor that requires a different sync than your computer results in half or double images or something in between.

4) You need to use AdvanceMame + AdvanceMenu as your mame engine + front end in order to use the monitor, and also configure each of them to only output to a medium-res arcade monitor EGA for it to sync.  Your video card should be able to put out at least some of the frequencies, but it depends widely on the card, revision and maker.

5) You could also by an ArcadeVGA card (I think--I don't know if they only work at CGA/Standard res, or also at EGA/Medium res).  The card auto-adapts computer frequencies into arcade monitor frequencies. Check the specs to ensure it can do 24K first however.

Lack of color:
1) Your computer outputs signals at .7 volts. An arcade monitor require 4 to 5 volt top range.  Therefore computers will always be dim connected up unless run through a video amplifier or the brightness and/or Screen and/or DRIVE controls (screen + drive are inside the monitor and not to be messed with unless you have proper knowledge) in order to make the signal brighter, but may not work as well as a video amplifier outside of the monitor.

2) The monitor may have a switch or be requiring COMPONENT video instead of RGB video. Component video allocates a large amount of signal toward the Green component, and 1/3rd the space to the Red and Blue components (since humans can't notice changes in red and blue as much as green). This is just a guess but perhaps you're feeding it RGB and it's expecting YCrCb or YPrPb instead. You can buy expensive converters to convert RGB into component or build your own, or see if the monitor has a switch to go to pure RGB

3) The other reason could be someones messed with the DRIVE and CUTOFF controls inside the monitor adjusting the Red/Green/Blue components incorrectly based upon a previous device connected to it.

4) You could have a short in your wiring for your cable. Try swapping the green wire for the red or blue inputs and see if it drives them. If not, it's not your wiring, it's in the set.

5) The final reason would be the tube is shot.  Is this a direct view TV (like a 13 countertop TV) with a big single heavy tube or is it a projection TV with 3 separate "guns" in the back that make the picture?  Either case, it could be the blue and red guns are dying.

Static/Dynamic:
- This is convergence: Making the 3 colors of RGB meet perfectly over all the screen so that they form perfect white dots/lines giving color purity. Static means that you set it once and the TV keeps it in place. Dynamic means that the TV constantly adjusts it to give the best picture possible given it's computer program.  (Heat and physical movement of the set may mean static won't "stay", while Dynamic can give problems with certain types of images as it constantly adjusts)

You said "vacuum tubes" so I presume this is a projection set.  I don't know much about projection TV's other than they are VERY tempormental and prone to misalignment from even simple movements across a room, let alone across a city. They also burn in their images and give weaker pictures faster, and are hard to converge giving sharp, correct color.

Surely the screen would not burn in from the amount of time the picture changes, is there a connection between refresh rate and screen burn ins?, and just out of interest, what is the website containing those programs

Thanks

Ok,

So far my graphics card has now gave a VERY stable image on my screen. it now no longer rolls, but i still have the problem of thhe Green only working, whilst all the other colours are all plugged in. ( for some strange reson, The BLUE must be in the BNC plug in order for the GREEN to work, RED does not need to be in, But on a good day, when you plug in the red, it likes to make the screen go a little redder).

I was redirected by someone, to a computer graphics card called a Matrox G400, because it gives a 24K output, which is needed by the monitor, Should i buy this card? and will it work?!.  Oh and another thing, is it possible to get a VGA to BNC plug? i can,t find anything!

Thanks

I fixed the colour problem, and it was due to my wiring!, i did'nt strip it back properly!.  However there is a samll problem just with the rolling now.  how do i fix the rolling now? when i change resolutions it makes the screen eiether quiker or slower, and the V-Hold pot on the monitor makes it too quick!.  What shall i do now? please reply!

You can get a VGA-to-BNC cable at Fry's electronics.  Sometimes they even show up on eBay.  I have two, one hooked up to my 50" med-res Virtua Cop and one to my 36" NEC Multisync.
