Sorting games in MameWah
« on: October 22, 2004, 09:29:59 pm »
After hours of configging today I finally got my Mamewah layout perfect, my xarcade working perfect, generated a mame.dat and downloaded a catver.ini.

I have the catver.ini showing up in teh main list of MAMEWAH - it has the Catver category so I assume its working.  I have rom folder vs dat file in the ini as well.  Now I have over 4500 roms, so having that 1 GIANT list isnt too helpful for finding games....

I thought getting the catver.ini would allow me to sort into categories, IE, fighters, shooters, puzzle, etc.    But I cant seem to find out HOW to do it.

What do I need to do?    Thanks

assuming you have the path pointing to the catver file in mamewah's mame.ini file, the thing that took me awhile to figure out was that you MUST refresh the main list first...then you should be able to sort by categories..

It took me awhile for the refresh  to take though

i got it refreshed, but how do I go about any other list?  All I see in Mamewah is Main List and Filtered List , and I select Filtered and nothing happens....

do you have a copy of other lists?

In the Mamewah ini folder there is a mame-0 file..this is the main uncustomizable list...you need to make a blank copy and name it mame-1 and so on...with notepad open   Mame-0.ini...then file save as Mame-1.ini and name the list whatever you want within the .ini

Now you should be able to choose the new list within Mamewah

ok so I made a mame-2.ini , named it Fighter / Versus (like the category in the catver.ini file).  Generated list from mamewah, it just made the exact same 4000+ rom list for that too......

SO I tried just deleting all my .lst files, and generating again.  Same thing.  Every mame-#.ini I make, I select it in mamewah, then go to generate flitered list, and it makes a list with all roms again.

Could you post the whole rom/listing settings in your mamewah.ini ?  Maybe its something there.....  Or do I have to go thru and pick every fighting game within mamewah and choose "add to custom list" ?

I think your problem is that you aren't refreshing the MAIN game list before you choose another custom list...

make sure the main list is refreshed....

then select another list and generate filtered list

ok in my mame-1.ini I have:

list title      Fighter / Versus
list type      normal

I selected Main List, Generated Main List again.

then I selected Fighter / Versus from the mamewah menu, no roms there yet.  Generate filtered list, bam spits out all roms again

is there anything needed in the mamewah.ini BESIDES the catver.ini location?  Do I need a mame.dat?  What list generation method should I use?

when I hit "generate filtered list" , shouldnt I get options of what to filter by?

When I hit the generate list, it just does it, no options to choose whats its doing

I notice a line in my mamewah.log:

Error 53: File not found in Emu_GenerateFilters
c:\mame87\mamepp.exe -listfull > c:\mame87\listfull

I just started playing with the 1.5x versions of Mamewah.
When I generate the original game list, I get an error message but the message in the message window doesn't stay up long enough for me to read.

Hwerver I get that same error 53 message.

In fact here's the entire content of the log file:

10/23/2004 1:28:04 AM CMD.EXE /c d:\mame\mamepp.exe -listxml|xml2info > C:\mamewah\mame.dat
10/23/2004 1:28:28 AM Error 53 File not found in EMU_GenerateFilters
10/23/2004 1:28:28 AM CMD.EXE /c d:\mame\mamepp.exe -listfull > d:\mame\listfull

mine is catver vs xml.
Is there an explanation of what those settings mean?

should I see a mame.dat file in c:\mamewah?
I wonder if the list sorting issues I'm having are related to this.

It almost looks like mamewah tries to generate some"info" file by calling mame but it doesn't work so it goes to "plan B"?

does the first command above try to pipe some output from mame through something called xml2info? is xml2info something installed with mame or mamewah? because that's not something I am aware of having on my cabinet.

Shows how I generated mame.dat using the xml2info command.  I haven't started categorizing lists yet, but it should get you up to speed with tshizzle.  Rom Folder vs XX tells MameWAH to compare those lists for the ROM entry and display the appropriate information.  If you have the dat file or xml doesn't matter because they contain the same info AFAIK.

I haven't started filtering yet, but I will sometime tomorrow.
