...support more than one version of mame?

yes, but the secondary version is crippled.  Simply take you mame listinfo.dat and extract the games you want to run on the old version.  Create a new dat called  Altmame.dat or whatever and paste those entries inside.  Now put a header file a the top similar to how you do for a regular clrmamepro dat file. Make sure that the name is NOT mame  now make a config file for whatever you named it.  As it isn't "mame" now some of the mame specific features now won't work, but for general launching it will work just fine.
