Other Emulators and Emulated Games?
« on: October 19, 2004, 03:38:35 pm »
Are there any good sites to locate other good emulators for my cab?  I use Mame, and a whole lot of it, but I know there is more out there :)  I am looking for emulators that may emulate games that Mame does not... such as Daphne.  I would have never ran across it unless I read about it here!

I am having a big party in a few weeks, so any help to spice up the machine would be appreciated!

Mame is the complete Arcade emulator.

If you have a good hardware then you can use ZINC emulator
to play games like [Tekken tag tournament].

Zinc is a cool emulator of Sega System1 hardware.  It uses your computer's graphic card to hardware render the pictures.  60 frames/sec or better on relatively fast PC.  I have a 2GHz P4 and don't skip any frames...

Keep in mind that the current version 0.9 needs it's own version of ROMS.  You can't use Mame's version until Zinc 1.0 comes out sometime soon I hope...

Nebula and Zinc are real emulators, but instead of emulating EVERYTHING on the processor, they use the graphics card to push some of the polygons for much better frames :). Just need a better system to run them than you need for MAME.

Oh, I know Nebula is a real emulator (I've used it and it is great for CPS 1/2, Neo Geo).  I just find it funny when someone blurts out something like "This one's fake" or "so and so sucks" just because they can't figure out how to run the program.

I just wanted to see if I could get some semblance of a legit response, even though I knew he couldn't give one. ;)

Nebula is by no means fake, but unless your pc is really really really old, imho it's definately a waste of time.  Here's the thing about non-mame arcade emulators.  They are not as forgiving as mame is about running them in a mame machine.

So, in order to put another arcade emu on your cab, it should probably fill one or more of the following criteria.

1.  It emulates games not yet emulated by mame.  The only one's that come to mind atm are the model 2 emulator and viva nono.

2.  It emulates already emulated games, but the performance is much greater.  Zinc and the u64emu would fit into this category, however at this point, ki and ki2 will run on a modern pc under mame, so there isn't much point in running it.  For those of you thinking, kawaks and nebula, think again.  Those games run full speed in mame on a puny 450 mhz, so if you are worrying about that then you have other concerns.  The kawaks, nebula interfaces are too cumbersome and unfriendly for cab use just to play games you can already play on an emulator that is friendly.

3.  The emulator actually has games worth playing and the games are actually emulated to the point that they are playable and useable on a mame cab.  This throws out a LOT.  Imho viva nono is too glitchy to be useful and the games aren't good enough to override it's problems.

So basically.... zinc and model 2 as far as arcade emus go.  Yup... that's pretty much it.

Ohhhhhhhhh!

i am backing up my statement about nebula.
what a perfect emulator it is .......wow :o

no one beat nebula as you talk about progress...
but emulation is not well....

Every thing has its impotrance wether it is usefull or not.
may be i am wrong but i can't see nebula any more in the future.

ive got more than an ample machine and ive enjoyed using nebula for quite some time, so unlessi ve been haullicinating all these years, its quite real :P
some titles just feel more smooth and polished on nebula which im sure is in part to the GPU assistance.
look at neorage, if you got mame you could say why would you need NR too?
but back several years ago, many of the NG titles didnt run smooth on MAME,Processor power just wasnt yet up to snuff so you needed the faster, probobly assembly based neorage.

HM...

We are not comparing Here NEBUAL,MAME,NEORAGE.
All of them are real emulators.... :-\
But when you talk about the original arcade board game play MAME is the only choice which has the real game play
timing system...If you are a good gamer and you know all
the deep points which are usefull when we play any game of NEOGEO.
eg: KING OF FIGHTERS ....SERIES....

LOT OF PROBLEMS ARE CAME INTO SEEN WHEN PLAYING THESE GAMES IN NEBULA AND NEORAGE....

MAME IS PERFECT.... ;)

Do you even read what you type before you post it?  I swear, reading your posts is giving me a tumor.

Now I use MAME for running all arcade games, be it CPS, Neo Geo or whatever.  That is primarily for the sake of simplicity.  But to say other emulators have problems running those games because your system cannot, that's crap.  And by the way, MAME is not perfect.  No emulator is.

Excuse KHAN, he's caught a bad cause of "can't-construct-a-sentence-itis" ;)

However, he is indeed correct.  It's all about goals.  Mame's goal is for accurate emulation, even if it requires more resources.  All other emulators only wish to make the games playable and "quick" on the lower systems.  The only way to do this, unfortunately is to sacrifice accuracy.  Although the casual player may not notice, timing issues and a few other glitches appear in these "third-party" emulators that normally don't appear in mame.

By default, mame is always more accurate unless otherwise noted.  The neogeo/cps2 emulators are no exception.

One notable exception, which is also proof of point are raster effects.... some raster effects are "simulated" (note i didn't say emulated) in the third party emulators.  However this is a glorious hack job and doesn't reflect the actual effects in the least.  Again, mame just bypasses these effects because a hack wouldn't be accurate.  However, these effects are used in maybe 3 games, for a split second in each game.  You'll never miss em.  :)
