Are Sega Master System & Game Gear worth it?
« on: October 15, 2004, 10:16:58 pm »
If I'm already using MAME, Virtual Pinball, SNES, Genesis, SEGA 32X, Nintendo, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, and Lynx ... is there any reason to bother with Sega Master System and Game Gear? Are there any games or features exclusive to these two relics?

I have everything I need to put them on the cab but it just seems so pointless.   :-\

If it's bothering you that they aren't there and everything else is.. add it! Some "freaks" like myself have to have everything... otherwise, I wouldn't bother. Can't think of any specific games for either system that are worthwhile that aren't on another system (done better).

It isn't bothering me. Just wanted to know if I was missing out on any hidden gems. After all, I wasn't planning on getting ZINC until I found out about Strider 2.

Most of the really good SMS games were unusual arcade conversions (like R-type and Rastan) or were also on Genesis. There's are some awesome SMS specific games tho, like Zillion, Golvellius and Power Strike.

Anyhow, it's a great system but most of it's arcade games are done better elsewhere.

I loved playing Phantasy Star, so for me setting up SMS was a no-brainer.  Plus, I kinda got used to the Alex Kidd games, sorta like Muzak in an elevator.  Your mileage, of course, will vary.

Game Gear, on the other hand, doesn't have any redeeming qualities IMHO.  I run it in my box because, well, I'm a game junkie and I must have it all!!!!  Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!

---Remember Adventure for Atari?  The graphics suck, the gameplay is horrid, it has no replay value, and it TOTALLY OWNED ME FOR THE ENTIRE TIME I OWNED MY VCS!!!!---

SMS & GG versions of the Sonic games are totally different - you might want to check them out if you're a Sonic fan.

The GG versions are pretty hard - Sonic 2 is nigh-on impossible in some sections, a stark contrast to the complete-in-a-day MegaDrive (Genesis) version.
