Help.. Terrible accident!!
« on: October 14, 2004, 03:58:27 pm »
Hey,
I was wondering if anyone could help me out... I had demoncade 2 almost done.. all games loaded, custom skins, 1 button shutdown etc..... I tried to install a switch for a light and BOOM! fried the CPU, fried the mboard, and all the harddrives!! Now the question I have is all my roms were on there, images, titles, snaps etc.. and I renamed them all manually from the good set things i think ie) Mike_Tyson_Punchout (A)[!].zip... that way... I renamed them to english like Mike Tyson Punchout.zip.... (for consoles etc).. now My question is.. is there a way to rename roms automatically???? and snaps etc. to match?? or must I do it all manually?????? I have no idea how...
I guess I have to resetup all the software! On the bright side I bought a new mb etc and upgraded from and xp athlon 2000, 512mb ram.. to a amd 64, 3200+ and 1gig of ram!! should be good..

Anyone advise where to get....
all snaps..titles.. images..all artwork for consoles.. and to um.. other stuff?????
If so please msg me I would greatly appreciate it! I believe i have some backed.....

Guess backup your stuff!!! I learned the hardway! :(

The best place for screens is www.screenshotarchive.com but you probably already know that.

Good Luck,

Bummer about your comp.  Didn't your mother always tell you to back up!  As for the screens, if you still want them without all the extras in the name you could try just setting it in the Front end you use to ignore the stuff after [ etc..  I think Mamewah does this now?  Or try giving Oscars File Renamer a go: http://www.screenshotarchive.com/downloads_apps.htm  It should atleast help you with the renaming of all the files. - You can setup macros to easily remove parts of a filename etc..

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the link, I was already aware of it..however it is the best...

My main concerns are renaming the files to match.. both the roms and snaps.. last time it was a pain in the you know what... I also do not want 10 copies of each game.. like you download the good set and you have english rom, a french rom, a beta etc....

Can anyone advise on the easiest way to simplfy things??? also anyone have a  list of recommended emulators for each system in mamewah???

I use Renamer v6. It is one of the most handiest programs I have.
http://www.albert.nu/default.asp?sub=programs/default.asp?sub=renamer/main.htm

To rename the files, open the directory, then use one of the choices in the edit menu. You'll work it out. Good luck.

I gotta ask...how'd you fry your machine with a light switch?  Please tell me you didn't try to hook up a light to your computer's PS.

OK
Here is what I did. I currently have a Marquee light..connects to a regular power plug.. I wired a off on switch.. like a single light switch works fine.

I got a few neon lights... the kind that connect to your pc power supply....... i wanted to have around marquee.. all worked well.. i extended the neg/postive so it reached, and wired to a single switch so i could turn it off an on.. worked fine.. was connected to a switch like a wall switch... same as the marquee switch...

so they both worked individually.. however i did not want 2 individual switches ( too lazy to have to cut a nother hole).. so.. i got one of those light switches that has 2 witches on one...... I asked my dad.. do the switches run independenly from one another???? he said yea.. i thought since he was in the trades he would know.. so i wired in the marquee to top switch, and the light to bottom... turned on marquee... great it worked.. turned on the neon and POW.... fried the pc....... I am not sure why but I will NEVER try it again.. it has costed me abundle.....
I lost a AMD XP 2000+ cpu, asus mb, 80 gig, 120 gig, 10 gig!!
I actually got a replacement board.. and brought it home it would not power on.. I took it back and they would not refund me the money or give me a new one! they rma it to asus... told me there was a small scratch on the back that I did! I was so mad... so I may be out 2 motherboards!!

I ended up buying a new mb asus, with athlon xp 64 3200 cpu.......so if i get the rma board replaced anyone want it? I cant recall the model off hand A7NX or something.... it was decent.......
and the good news is the 80 gig and 120 gig HDS are under warranty and the manufactures are sending new ones.... I learned my lesson i think...... ;D

It really ticked me off.. now I have to start software all over... and i had the new mamewah all set up working great! I really would like some advise on renaming roms, snaps etc.. and not having duplicates..... anyone help i would appreciate it... whether it be in mamewah or other.... thanks....

PS dont do what i did!! eheheheh

Where did you buy it from that wouldn't replace a board you *just* bought?

Hey
I bought the board from http://www.compu-best.com/
DONT SHOP THERE.

I was careful with the board etc.. took it in, they said that they had to try it.. they went into the back room for awhile.. said yep it dont boot... I said ok great exchange it.. then he flips it over and finds a tiny scratch.. says i did it, and that he could not exchange it.. he had to rma it... i argued.. but no avail.... so if i get a new one.. i am going back there and ramming it down his throat. the place offers good prices NO SERVICE at all.

Sorry relay?? one word?? help me out here.. i am not that bright... I gotta run.. need sleep for night shift tonite.

So the swich was attached to 110 volts for the marquee light and the 12 volt section of the computer power supply for the neon? Yikes!! I bet thet motherboard has some burn marks!
It hurts just hearing about all of the lost work. Good luck!

No the board in the accident is not the same.. the board in the accident I tossed.... and got the same board from that address.. right out of the box it did not work and they found a tiny scratch on it.. said I did it.

Good news is I hooked up the neon lights today with no problems!! Bad news is, it did not work the way I wanted it too, so now I am going to be getting ride of them.. i have 3 bulbs with it too! any one intersted??? neon blue is the color

Damn... just went through the same thing last weekend, sorry about your luck! I lost 100+ gigs... but I am almost back to where i was in just a week ;) god i love bittorrent and screenshotarchive! Fortunately my mamewah was setup on a seperate drive, so I didn't lose all my setup.

For your files, if you use clrmame or romcenter, either can automatically fix your rom names when you scan. If you renamed the screenshots, i dunno.. but why would you do that?? :)

You could easily write a batch file to do it but that involves getting a list of names (good tools) and inputing all the alternate names you want to use...still lots of work. Maybe someone else has already done it and would post the bat file? Maybe?

I have a perl script that strips the tags from the name ("mario bros (U)[!].zip" becomes "mario bros") I can't remmeber how I dealt with duplicates (if I have both the japanese and the US version they would both have the same name after stripping the tags). I think I used GoodTools to sort them by country? Can't remember for sure.
I'll try and dig that up, I haven't touched my GBA collection in a while.
It'll be perl for sure though so some may not want to deal with that.
