Mortal Kombat vs vsync!
« on: October 13, 2004, 05:21:19 am »
Hi,

Okay, has anybody ever got mortal kombat to vsync properly in any version of MAME? Obviously, with it's weird 53Hz refresh I imagine windows has no hope, but I can't even get AdvanceMAME under Linux to vsync it!

I allowed AdvanceMAME to make up it's own 'perfect' modeline by using just "advmame mk", and I got the correct resolution (400x254), but still no vsync. I'm not sure, but I think advanceMAME said it was running at 56Hz. Nothing I could change in any config file would persuade it to run at 53Hz or vsync.

So, is vsync on emulated Mortal Kombat possible? Those scrolling character portraits on the title screen look really bad without it!

I'm almost certain it runs perfectly on my cab - it sticks in my mind as I remember noticing how bad the sync-ing looked on my PC monitor...

I'm using an ArcadeVGA, MK running at 400x256, triplebuffer 1, waitvsync 0.  I think by nature this mode runs at 53hz with the AVGA.

I will have to load it up when I'm at home to check that it runs as well as I remember...

Thanks - I remember that the AVGA has a special mode for MK. I will try the equivalent modeline from http://asuaf.org/~dboyer/avga_w_linux/ and see if I have any luck.

Looks like that should work - good luck! :)

Is there a way to get arcade-authentic scrolling in the Midway games (via software options) on a TV, or will the set always be locked in at 60 Hz, resulting in jerkiness? Changing the waitvsync setting doesn't appear to do the trick.

I think it depends on how your TV is connected. If it's via the S-Video connector, then I think that will always work at exactly 60Hz. Running via RGB (using SCART for instance) you can make the video card output a variety of refresh rates, and most TVs have a bit of tolerence in terms of what they can sync to - so you may be able to get your TV working at 53Hz in this way.

I used Powerstrip to create a custom 53 Hz resolution. Now while it did make a noticeable difference in the Midway games on my PC monitor, the TV connected to my video card through S-Video still appeared to be stuck on 60 Hz (regardless of whether or not I made the TV the primary display.)

I live in the US, so the SCART option is unlikely. Although, I have bought a Radeon 8500LE and the ATi HDTV component adapter for use in the cab that I am currently building. Hopefully that will be able to output multiple refresh rates.
