Hi, I'm wondering whether anyone here has got any opinions on the new PStwo.

Up to now I've not been tempted to purchase a Playstation, and they're now old technology. However the new PStwo looks pretty cool.

I wonder if they'll reduce the price as they did with the PSone.

Thanks in advance

I like em.

I plan on picking up one and putting my original day 1 ps2 in my cabinet.  It's been having some trouble with movies and it will be bad ass to play modern fighters on my cab.

This will all be way down the road as I have yet to build said cabinet.:D

I'm a big fan of the HDLoader program and since there's no room for a HD in the new PS2 I wouldn't be inclined to get one.

But... if there actually is some way of hooking up an IDE HD to it externally that would be cool.  You could just construct some sort of enclosure that uses those swappable drive bays!

Y aknow now that yo mention it i never realized it didn't have room for an HD.  That's kinda silly.  I kno it has a built in Network adapter but I wonder why no HD.  Other than the HD loader and FFXI are there really any games that are using the HD anyway?  I always liked the idea but it doesn't seem like they've done enough with it.

I just bought a ps2 recently and I am happy with it because you can buy tons of great games for dirt cheap ($20 new and $8-15 for used).  Now if only I had the time to play all the games I bought.

The "official" line from Sony is that only hardcore gamers would want a HD, and those gamers already have a PS2, so there's no need to incorporate it into the PSTwo.  My guess is that Sony has abandoned the HD concept, and will have purely online storage for the PS3, so they can control what you're storing, and make sure it's not games.  That way, they can still allow you to take advantage of the ability to expand games/make your own playlists (from songs purchased fom Sony's online music store, no less)/patch faulty games, etc. while limiting the possibility for rampant piracy.

If that's the case then it's BS.  I have not and will not take my consoles online.  I just have no desire to play games with people I don't know.  I don't have internet service at home and the more time I spend on it at work I don't really see it necessary to have it.  I do want freakin customizable playlists in my games.  that's one feature xbox has that I want.  That and SVC Chaos. :P

I don't have a HD now but if they would support it better I would pick one up.  And the HD loader got squashed so that's out.  Oh well.  There goes another peripheral that doesn't get the attention it needs to be worthwhile.  Now I'm gonna go see about getting me some bongos... ;D

An interesting point is the fact that the new PSTwo is top loading....makes me wonder if the ol PS1 swap trick might work with backups?  Just a thought...

I was considering replacing my old PS2 with a newer PStwo, as my current system has been having trouble starting up dvd movies lately, but I've heard some bad things thus far.  Supposedly, heating up is still a significant problem with the system (some claim even moreso now than with the old version) - many reports of the system overheating during long sessions of GTA:San Andreas. Secondly, it's still pretty loud, so it's not ideal for watching DVDs...
And as far as the toploading/swap trick, I've heard that it won't work without some modification (it has a slightly more complex way of telling that the lid is open than on the ps1).

Indeed. I'll stick with my old style PS2 with it's 160 gb HD and HDLoader. If Sony does force us to use online storage with the PS3 I'll be forced to look at the next generation Nintendo and (gag) Microsoft offerings. I live way out in the boonies, high speed internet is not an option for me, and I have no interest in gaming online anyway. I want a hard drive in my modern console.

Yeah,

Sony has a knack for ticking people off and this is just one of their latest fiasco's.  I can't imagine Square/Enix is too pleased with them dropping the HDD.  I'm planning on purchasing a PSP when they come out....hope it has everything they say it's going to.

I should be getting the new slim version of the playstation 2 tomorrow, friday, or at the very latest monday. I'll let everyone know how it is.

I hear battery life will be terrible on the early runs... give it some time on the psp...it can only get better as they improve... just look at the first model ps2's ::shudders::

Hi everyone! first post  :P

The new Pstwo looks sick, the only thing im worried about is getting a mod chip for it since it is much smaller than a standard ps2

i got the ps2 today :)

it gets hot, but not blazing hot... just don't have anything surrounding it, it needs space to cool... i hear that it has a small fan, but it's passively cooled for the most part... the toploader feels kind of cheap...no less than the ps1 did though... overall I think it's a good system... the integrated network adapter is nice...the adapter is kind of bulky if you want it to be portable... there is no off button, you have to unplug it, you can only make it go on standby unless you physically remove the power source...

it's not bad though, pretty good buy... since it's small it'd have no prob fitting in someone's cab :)

ConsoleSource.com has chips that they advertise as being compatable with the slim PS2.

i... i hear that it has a small fan...

It does indeed have a fan.

This might be a dumb question, but as the Playstation 2 has USB ports, could you not plug an external USB hard drive into one of the ports?

PS2Ownz has a few details about this "USB-Loader". Don't know for sure if this is legit or bogus, but they've posted this screen-shot and say that:

Quote
As reported in our past news, there is a PSTwo USB Loader coming very soon to on-line vendors including our affiliate Linker4U.com! Similar to HD Advance, this remarkable utility will allow users to install and play PS2 games from any external USB HDD on the new slimline PSTwo console at excellent speeds! We will post more details as soon as our sample arrives for REViEW here in our Site News, and those interested can check out the PS2Ownz.com exclusive USB-Loader screenshot below. Enjoy!

Does the new PS2 have USB 2.0 ports? If they're just the old USB 1.0 ports, then it would take forever to load games from a USB hard drive.

Unfortunately the ps2 does not support 2.0 which means that it will load at a max of 12Mbits/s.

I am almost positive they both use usb 1.x  but it would be cool if I was wrong.
