Mame still runs that little bit too fast...
« on: September 25, 2004, 04:50:41 am »
Hey guys!

I've got a problem - well, at least I think I've got a problem. Basically, whenever I play a 'classic', the throttling doesn't seem to be working. I've tried setting 'waitvsync' , I've tried versions 55b, 86b, 87b, Mame32, Pacmame, MamePP and regular Mame - but the older games still run that little bit too fast..

I've even tried this on two separate PC's - my main gaming machine (3ghz P4, 1gb RAM) and my 'arcade machine' (400mhz P2, 192mb RAM) but I still get the same problem, it just runs too fast.

For example, in frogger on the first level, the large logs near the end go fast enough to totally wrap around the screen in about a second - it's not unplayable, but it's that LITTTLE bit too fast. In Ms. Pacman, the chomping sounds almost overlap each other.

I know that throttling is working, because if I unthrottle it goes super fast...

Maybe I'm wrong, and these games are meant to be played at this speed, but I'm sure they aren't. I'm sure of it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

(nb: The spec of my arcade system, and thus the one I want to sort this out on is Mame 86b PP running through MameWah which is running as a shell for Win98 on the 400mhz P2)

If you're set to vsync, and your refresh rate is 75 Hz, then the framerate will be borked.  Set your refresh rate to 60hz.

Right, I've tried "mame.exe mspacman -waitvsync -matchrefresh" with my monitor's resolution definately set at 60Hz - Mame shows that Ms Pacman is running at 60fps. The speed hasn't changed at all...

Could someone maybe run a small vid-capture playing one of the games so I can see whether I'm actually running these too fast or I'm just being stupid?

When you play a game press F11 to show the FPS.  They should be running at 57/57 or 60/60 depending on the game.  If it's running that speed then it's all ok.  I try not to match refresh either as some games may be set to lower FPS and you've just told them to speed up to match 60.

Your problem is tottaly apposite to the others ;)
Games are running fast...
1)uncheck the option frame skipping automatic to draw every frame.
2)sound samplerate tt 48000.
3)Color Depth full 32 bit.
4)mark the all the RENDERING options are in ADVANCE.
5)Must use a DIRECT3D filter.

Hope that you will find the solution of your problem.

Guys, unless the driver for that game is coded badly, all you have to do is ensure that "throttle" is turned on.  Then the framerate is locked and can't go any faster.
