Dragon's Lair CD-Rom Game on Windows?
« on: September 23, 2004, 10:05:11 pm »
I got a Dragon's Lair CD-Rom game for a good price, but I can't figure out how to get it to run on WinXP.  In fact, I don't even know who makes it, all I have is the disc, and there isnt a comp name on it or anything.  On the disk are a lot of DAT and IBM files.  There are a couple of EXE files (DL, Dragon, and Install.)  Running the INSTALL prompts me to insert a floppy disk so it can make a boot disk.  Running either DL or Dragon gives me a "no emm present" error.  Is anyone familiar with this disc, and if so can it work in WinXP?

I had it...I think I ran it on Win98.  The version I had was pretty crap, the menu and everything about the presentation looked very dated, like it was intended for Win95 (at best).

I'd say there's a good chance it won't run in XP...it sounds to me as if the game is for DOS - you could try this: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net

Hrmm...well I guess if its not going to be that good, I should look for a more arcade quality version of the game.  Where should I look?

IMO you should look for the 20th anniversary edition DVD-Video collection of DL, Space Ace, and Dragon's Lair 2. These disks have some extra scenes (prototype scenes that didn't go into the actual game), some interviews with Don Bluth and others, game walkthroughs, an episode of "Starcade" where the contestants play Dragon's Lair, and I'm sure other stuff that I forgot. There are scripts available that will take the DVD-Video and rip the audio and video from just the games and make it usable for Daphne.

Just search on Ebay for "Dragon's Lair 20th anniversary". I got mine via Buy it Now, but it looks like the supply has dried up somewhat.

The DVD-Video disks will play on any DVD player, PS/2, etc, but the gameplay on PS/2 was poor, there were half-second pauses after every move, not just after every scene. That's why you need Daphne.

Gamestop.com sells the 20th Ann. CD ROM sets...

...but if you want to use them as a replacement for Daphne, it's not gonna be very good.

They run right off of the CD, and in XP, but there is no way to install them, and the video quality is quite poor, although good for a CD I guess. It was also a pain to map the buttons to my CP.

Daphne is a PITA to set up, but worth the time! just make sure all your MPEG directories match what your framefiles say they are, and all should be good.

you may also want to rip your dvd if you choose to get one. Using a virtual cd/dvd emulator like alcohol or daemon tools, you can simply mount the image using a virtual drive(fake cd drive) thus putting it on your hd, and not having to have the dvd in your dvd tray. Just another option to consider as well. Not to mention a bit quicker load times being on the hd. Game On!

I have a similar CD, though mine has Dragon's Lair, DL 2, and Space Ace.  IT was released through digital leisure  www.digitalleisure.com.  Maybe you have an earlier release from them; their website may help.

fyi- Re the 20th anniversary CD Rom set...I was able to literally drag the entire Dragon's Lair CD contents onto my desktop and it work perfectly with no CD. It doesn't work for DL2 or Space Ace though. But it's a quick way to install Dragon's Lair (without Daphne).

Personally for my purposes....the 20th anniversary set is great!.....I had some run issues with Daphne that annoyed me... (on for DL & Space Ace)....that have been avoided by using this CD Rom version. For $20. you cannot go wrong!

Seriously. Will it fit in my basement or what?

I tried doing that on my laptop and didn't have any luck. So I just carry the CD with me everyplace.

I have the 20th Anniversary CD's (great for my old, weak laptop), the DVD's (great for the home theatre) and Daphne (great for the arcade cab) setup, and I'm very pleased with the quality of Daphne's emulation.

The CD's are great for on the go, but the hit in video quality at full screen is just too great for me to look past, and the DVD's look awesome, but they have a bit more gameplay lag than I like, at least on my old ass DVD player.

Don't give up on Daphne! Once you get it going, you'll love it!

In fact, I think I'll play me a game of Dragon's Lair right now.
