Fear of Service Pack 2
« on: September 20, 2004, 09:43:19 am »
I'm wondering how many people have installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 on their computers and what, if any, problems you have had.

I've heard that it can cause problems. It corrupted my boss' hard drive, so my suspicions were totally confirmed.

Comments, success stories, horror stories?
I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

If you have a pirated copy of XP you should deffinitly watch out for SP2.  I have two friends that had to format because SP2 sent there computers into a loop, as in it would boot to windows and then restart about 15 seconds in!

I installed it on a spare machine at home to see how it would go. It seems like all the 'extra security' features are pretty much useless if you're already running Norton Internet Security. After I installed it asked if I just wanted to use Norton instead of it's built in security, so i said yes. I haven't noticed any differences using SP2, but then I don't use that PC for much.

SP2 won't install on my main machine at home, it locks up at the 'checking for available space' part of the install.

SP2 is really nice for laptops.  The wireless stuff works MUCH better.  Internet Explorer is a lot better, but still nowhere near as good as Firefox.

The security updates were necessary.  It would be a total copout for the maker of an operating system to not patch up their holes or block security threats based on the fact that a third party package could do it for them.

I would install it but my Windows partition has about 100MB of space left on it.  I like how they recommend at least 2 GB and I gave it 4.  Then a year down the road all their security updates and programs that won't let you tell them where to install take up all my space. :(

Is this necessary for a box that won't be going online?  Like my cab computer running xp?  A friend mentioned it to me but I figured I didn't need it.  What do you guys think?

I just installed it on my laptop.  It seems to have improved the wireless capaabilities, but other than that, I can't see much of a difference.  Wait a minute... theres a black sedan pulling in the driveway...  men in dark suits are getting out...  they're at my door...  hey!  What do you think you're doing!  Let me go!  Aaaaaaugh!

i installed it. then it had really childish security settings that i had to change. then when i tried to download a rom it would download it as some strange file into some ie temp folder (not giving any choice like it normally would) and then say the files dont work. hooray for system restore i say!! now, the only side effect is that i had some cool sounds for my msn messenger (mail alert etc) but it keeps resetting them to the boring old ones each time i open it...

I naturally suspect any even numbered Microsoft release, as they've always screwed up more than they fixed.

I've installed SP2 on at least 5 or 6 pirated copies of WinXP with no problems.

Had problems initally connecting to Microsoft's server to download the service pack (along with anything else off it) but, once that problem was taken care of, it installed fine.  Been running it on my new system since Friday and haven't had a single problem yet.

Negative!  It just won't install SP1 if it's a pirated copy.  I have a friend who works for big brother and they told me this.  I know, never trust MS!  ;)  Sounds like your friends had a worm virus or malicious spyware already on the PC.

It is entirly posible to install SP1 on a pirate copy of winXP!  I have two friends that have done it.

All I know about it is that you have to edit some registry settings or something to that effect.  There's information on how to do this out there somewher on the web.

Updating to SP1 or SP2 all depends on the Serial Number you have.... if you installed WinXP using on of the "Black Listed" Serial Numbers.   Then you won't be able to download any SP.    ;)
