goodtools/NES roms with screenshots...got some working...need help
« on: September 18, 2004, 03:34:02 pm »
i used goodtools to organize my roms according to that Cowering's Goodtools guide or whatever.  so now i have SOME of my screenshots working for my NES roms. (im using mamewah by the way) ive searched the forum and there are debates about how to rename roms (howard says thats bad) and then you can mask the bracketed extensions out to the side in mamewah (although never found out how to do that) and just all kinds of stuff.   but what i want to know is:

1.  how do i get mamewah to not show the bracketed stuff for my NES roms?

2.  some of my roms have the [o1] extension out to the side....does this mean i need another copy of the rom in order for the screenshot to work with it?

3.  i downloaded screenshots from screenshotarchive.com and they are said to be in Goodtools format...but only some of them are being shown with my roms.  what do i need to do to get them to work right with my roms?

please help.  thanks.

3. There are around 10000 different NES roms classified by the good tools.  The screenshot archive only has about 2000 NES screens because they were only made for good rom dumps.

2.  o1 means overdump which means that the rom is a larger size than it should be.  It should probably play just fine.  To match it up with the screenshot, rename it.

How I matched my roms to the screens:  I started with a rediculous amount of NES roms and then I did some file searches to extract the good USA roms which most likely had a corresponding screen from the archive.

If you use Goodtools and the rename "dirs" command, it will split your set up into directories based on country code, bad dumps etc...  Most of the screenshot packs at my site are based on just the "USA", "World" or "Euro" gooddump roms which end up in those directories after using goodtools.

Unlike mame roms, console rom sets consist of thousands of roms with most games having a large number of multiple copies including many bad dumps, over dumps etc..  By using goodtools and the dirs command, you can weed out most of the crap. - Most console rom sets can be gotton down to about ~600 decent USA roms.

If you really love console roms (as I do!) I would seriously consider grabbing a full set of them off a burner like you do with Mame.  That way you'll have a decent set which you can grab out a full USA or World set from.

ah i see.  well i was thinking that all 1000 or so of my NES roms were good, but now that i see there are multiple copies, ill use goodtools to weed that out.  thanks man.
