BASIC CPO Photoshop Question ...
« on: September 13, 2004, 09:05:12 am »
I'm very new to photoshop and MAME as well ...

I've decided to design my own CPO ... but I was wondering how do I know what the size should be in photoshop?

i.e.  Say I know what the dimensions are going to be for the control panel ... how big should I make the window in photoshop?  how many pixels, etc?

Make it in inches, not pixels.  Make it the full size of your CP and at least 300 dpi.

If you can't be a good example at least try to be a horrible reminder.

I just did my marquee at 26" X 8" and it's a monster at 80 MB file size. Keep in mind you need a decent computer and some decent RAM to work with files this large. Otherwise it might crash on you...

Inches are good. You can type any dimension into any dialog in PS, and it will translate.

The resolution you need depends on the printer you're sending it to. On my printer, anything over 100 ppi is pretty much a waste. It can render vibrant vectors up to 300 ppi, but not pictures, and nothing in subtle shades.

Making a CPO in photoshop will be very tedious. You can use the vector tools to layout the controls, and it will be great for that, but when you get to putting artwork on it, it will get old fast if you try anything complex.
